Nurse: How do you feel today?

Patient: Thank god I fell better.

N: I was told that you’ll start chemotherapy this afternoon. Are you ready for it?

P: I’m kind of nervous coz I heard the therapy hurts a lot.

N: Don’t worry. It will hurt just a bit. Here’s nausea pill. I’ll come again to take your blood and I’ll take you to the therapy room.

P: Okay. What’s the procedure before the therapy? Blood pressure, pulse taken, something like that?

N: yea. Your blood pressure, pulse, temperature and also your height and weight. So that the appropriate dose can be calculated. Your friends are coming. ^^

G1: Hey, how are you today? You look cheerful today.

P : I’m doing fine right now. Glad to have you two here.

G2: We heard you were hospitalized yesterday. So we came here to pay you a visit.

P: Yeah. Yesterday I was a bit weak. So many blood came out from my mouth and nose and I suddenly fell unconscious. Well, I think it’s normal for a cancer patient to go back and forth to the hospital.

G1: I really don’t know what to say. I was so shocked when you first told me that you have breast cancer.

G2: Me too. I’m so sorry for you. (T.T)

P: This is life. I’m trying to keep on living. I’m positive that there will be a cure for this disease.

G1: What caused you to know that you have breast cancer? Any symptoms?

P: I noticed that I had a swell under on my shoulder but I didn’t really care about it coz I thought it is normal. Then I felt pain within breast areathat I decided to make had pain within breast area a medical check-up and later the doctor told me there were the symptoms of breast cancer.

D: You look healthy today. How’s your condition? The blood still comes out?

P: Today there’s no blood. That’s why I’m so happy.

D: Great. Are they your friends?

P: Yeah. They’re my college friends.

G1 & G2 : Nice meeting you doctor. Do you have time right now? We would like to ask more about cancer.

D: I have an appointment in 20 minutes time but yeah, sure. What can I help you?

G1: You know doc. We were talking about cancer, not only breast cancer but also other cancer and what causes it.Is it true that eating fast food can lead to cancer?

D: It’s not 100% proven yet but from my medical opinion, I can say it is true. Most of the meal like hamburger contains carcinogen especially the grilled one. You know what carcinogen is?

G1G2: Nope.

P: I know. Carcinogen is a chemical thing that formed when meat is grilled or pan-fried at high temperature.

D: True. Carcinogens cause cancer by producing changes (or mutations) in the genetic material, or DNA, of a cell. These mutations result in uncontrolled cell division. A cancer-causing substance can alter the DNA of a cell directly or it can react with other chemicals in the body to form substances that cause gene mutations. (Genes are sections of DNA that serve as units of hereditary information.) A transformed cell may continue to function normally and not begin to multiply and develop into a tumor until many months or years later. It is not unusual for cancer to appear 20 to 25 years after initial exposure to a carcinogen.
G2: I read in the newspaper that a sample of grilled chicken had been taken from fast food restaurant like mc donalds, burger king... all of the samples are proved to contain carcinogen.

P: Gosh. I always go to Lotteria coz it’s near my office and I don’t really have time to have a proper lunch.

D: Maybe that’s one of the reason why you get cancer. The other thing is the consume of cold water. You know we usually order a set, hamburger, French fries and coke. That is harmful actually.

P: Why? You mean because the food contain too much calori?

D: As we know, fast food is very oily. When we drink cold water after taking food, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.

Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.

P: Logically it is a possible cause. I really like to drink icy water especially after meal coz it relieves my stomach. But I didn’t know it would cause cancer.

D: Many people don’t know what’s good and what’s bad for their health. Your eating habit actually play as the main role of your health. You are what you eat.

Nurse: Doc, you have to meet a patient within 5 minutes so I bet you should be going.

D: Okay. Nice talking to all of you. Maybe we can a long chat later.

G1 & G2: Yea if you have time, let’s meet another time. Thanx for your time.

D: Anytime. Hey, Chamali. Do take care and good luck in your chemotherapy.

P: Hope everything will be fine. Pray for my cure.

One study conducted by researchers from NCI's Division of CancerEpidemiologyandGeneticsfound a link between individuals withstomachcancer and the consumption of cooked meats. The researchers assessed thedietsand cooking habits of 176 people diagnosed with stomach cancer and 503 people without cancer. The researchers found that those who ate their beef medium-well or well-done had more than three times the risk of stomach cancer than those who ate their beef rare or medium-rare. They also found that people who ate beef four or more times a week had more than twice the risk of stomach cancer than those consuming beef less frequently. Additional studies have shown that an increased risk of developingcolorectal, pancreatic, andbreastcancer is associated with high intakes of well-done, fried, or barbequed meats.cinogen - humans, body, used, chemical, form, energy, gas, animals, cells, cause, substance, waves, change, How carcinogens cause cancer
