Position's primary function and its relationship to the Institute as a whole:
Plans, provides and supervises nursing interventions for individuals with cancer and cancer related health care problems. As registered professional nurses, Nurse I’s will diagnose and treat human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as patient care, health teaching, and health counseling; provide interventions supportive to or restorative of life and well-being and execute medical regimens prescribed by a physician, dentist or other licensed health care provider authorized by the State Education Commissioner’s regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
·  Adheres to all regulatory requirements and professional standards such as ANA, ONS, AORN, AACN and ASPAN as applicable to the specific area of nursing practice.
·  Based on a comprehensive review of the patient’s overall condition, prepares, continually reviews and evaluates plans of nursing intervention to ensure that such interventions are consistent with the patient’s comprehensive treatment plan.
·  Performs nursing assessment that includes the holistic needs of each patient with consideration of his/her physiological, psychological, social, ethnic, cultural, educational and spiritual strengths and needs.
·  Ensures that plans of nursing intervention include consideration of the patient’s cultural and ethnic background, customs, needs, beliefs, primary language, age, and developmental status and includes the family and/or support system in the planning and delivery of care.
·  Provides direct patient care and assumes responsibility for the nursing care of assigned patients.
·  Participates at nursing and multidisciplinary patient care conferences and provides nursing input during the development and communicates implementation of treatment plans.
·  Coordinates nursing care activities with other professional disciplines to ensure that the plan of nursing intervention is consistent with and integrated with the total treatment plan.
·  Administers medications, IV fluids following established policies and procedures.
·  Demonstrates knowledge of dosage, route, action, side effects, contraindications, and adverse reactions of medication.
·  Provides health education/teaching for patients and their designated significant others.
·  Manages the admission, discharge and transfer of patients according to RPCI policies and procedures.
·  Confers with nursing staff of upcoming shift regarding condition of patients and/or any unusual events or problems to ensure continuity of care.
·  Adheres to the Institutes standard for Employee Conduct.
·  Protects patient’s privacy, confidentiality and their rights as health care consumers. Demonstrates an understanding of and is compliant with HIPAA regulations. Is able to define own level of access for minimum necessary requirements.
·  Complies with and is knowledgeable of Institute and department policies/procedures and standards of care.
·  Participates in the implementation of research protocols. Uses published research findings in delivery of c are.
·  Ensures medications and supplies are maintained to meet nursing care needs and promote cost containment.
·  Accounts for the issuance of controlled drugs and inventories such drugs as required.
·  Participates in staff meetings as required.
·  Participates in Quality Improvement activities and process improvement groups. Is cognizant of patient satisfaction information as well as nursing satisfaction results for their respective area of practice.
·  Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards.
·  Communicates all pertinent patient/family information to the responsible practitioner within an appropriate time frame.
·  Prepares other written or electronic documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.
·  Provides support, comfort and reassurance to patients and significant others.
·  Appropriately utilizes/operates all equipment required to provide nursing care to assigned patients.
·  Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs and to provide the care needed by assigned patient population.
·  Demonstrates knowledge of unit response to a disaster or utility failure.
·  Is an active participant in team dynamics activities including the service enhancement initiatives that result in providing a quality product.
·  Makes use of the personal protection equipment available in the Institute to ensure safety for both patients and other members of the health care team.
Administrative/Supervisory:
·  Oversees the direct implementation of nursing care to ensure that it is carried out in accordance
with the plan of nursing intervention and overall treatment plan and to ascertain if the needs of
the patient requires modification of either plan.

·  Provides information and direction to other clinical staff on nursing standards of practice and

procedures.
·  Provides advice and consultation on nursing related matters to other staff, administrators or other disciplines.
·  Assigns duties to support nursing personnel based on the acuity and requirements of the patients.
·  Participates in the evaluation of individual work performance of subordinate staff.
·  Makes clinical rounds on unit/area to assess nursing care needs of patients and to supervise
care delivery by subordinate personnel.
·  Provides information either orally or in writing to the Nurse Administrator and/or other appropriate staff concerning nursing issues, acceptable levels of nursing care and the required number of personnel to meet those requirements.
·  Assesses and communicates needs to appropriate supervisor; attends committee meetings as
assigned.
·  Provides or ensures provision of orientation to new support personnel to job requirements,
equipment and policies.
·  Presents at staff development and professional and community education programs as required.
·  Adheres to nursing standards while promoting efficiency and cost containment.
·  Complete annual health assessment as required by the Institute.
Professional Development:
·  Attends/completes required mandatory inservices on an annual basis.
·  Attends unit/area or department educational programs offered which have relevance to the special needs of assigned patient population, new products, equipment, policies/procedures, clinical care or research protocols.
·  Identifies professional educational needs and takes appropriate action to meet those needs.
·  Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature and participating in inservice meetings and workshops.
·  Participates in organizational decision-making groups such as committees, councils or task force groups.
·  Completes continuing education programs which provide at least 10 CEUs per calendar year.
Minimum Qualifications:
1.  Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
2.  Current license/permit to practice as a professional registered nurse in N.Y. State.
3.  Certification in oncology or other appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications:
1.  Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
2.  One year experience as an RN in a clinical setting.
3.  Certificate in oncology or other appropriate field (critical care, operating room, etc)
