NUMERO DE IDENTIDAD EXTRANJERO: (NIE)
The main objective of this kind of document (NIE) is to provide a foreigner with a foreign identity number in order to identify him/her.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. That person must not to reside in Spain in an unlawful situation.
2. That the main purpose of NIE must be of economic, professional or social interests for the foreign person.
3. That the person who applies for NIE must specify the reasons why he/she is applying for that number.
DOCUMENTS TO BE PRESENTED:
1. Official form (EX15) in duplicate, properly filled in and signed.

And FORM Model 790 properly filled in and signed.
2. Copy of passport (or identity card if person is citizen of the European Union). The original documents provided must be shown when applying for NIE.
Economic, professional or social reasons which justify why this person needs the NIE.
NOTE: When presenting documents from other countries, these must be translated into Spanish or into any other co-official language used in Spain.
On the other hand, all foreign public document must previously be legalised by the Spanish Consular Office with jurisdiction in the country in which the document has been issued, as well as by the DFAT unless such document has the Hague Apostille on it according to Hague Convention of the 5th October 1961.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW:
Person who is authorised to submit this form: The foreigner in person.
Place to submit those documents:
From within Spain: Direccion General de Policia y de la Guardia Civil or from Oficina de Extranjeria or from Police Office in the town/city where you have your place of residence.
From outside Spain: From your Consular Office where you have your place of residence (all documents must be sent to “Comisaria General de Extranjeria y Fronteras”).
HOW MUCH TO PAY:
You must pay $13.95AUD in cash at this office before we start processing your NIE documents. Don´t forget to fill in Model 790 as well.
HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE:
5 days from the day all documents reach “Comisaria General de Extranjeria y Fronteras” in Madrid.
