Stop Dog Whining

You can stop your dog from crying when you want him to spend some time in the yard. Try to ignore the whining. Exercise him and spend part of the day socializing with him before leaving him in the yard. Give him learning toys or anything that he finds comforting to prevent his boredom.

Description:

A dog crying, barking or whining when he is in the yard can be a fairly common problem and owners should be ready to face this problem if they like to leave their dog in their backyard for an extended period of time.

Before we look at ways to help your Great Dane overcome his crying, it is important to stress that the majority of breeds should be with their family. There are a few breeds that enjoy being outdoors for most of their day but dogs are pack animals and thrive when they can be with their family. A dog that is chained or left alone to live outside will begin to have many behavioral problems, including severe aggression.

That being said, generally, when a dog cries, it is usually because he wants something or he is feeling lonely or bored. He expresses that loneliness by crying, whining or barking and this can become a very bad habit that your Great Dane can get into.

If you would like your Great Dane to spend part of his day in the yard, either tied or in a fenced yard, there are a few things that you can do to help prevent him from crying.

Number One: Exercise, exercise, exercise

Just like you would do if you were crating a dog, exercising him before you chain him in the yard will help keep him from whining and barking for two reasons. The first is that he will be too tired to bark and will just curl up in a comfortable spot in the yard. The second is that exercising him will give you time to bond together. Your Great Dane won't feel quite so lonely when you put him outside for the day.

Number Two: Ignore the whining

Although it can be very hard to ignore the noise of your whining dog, it is important to do so. Yelling at a dog, coming out of the house, and giving in to his demands, will only encourage him to whine. It will give him exactly what he wants: you.

If you act as though nothing is happening, the dog will learn that whining and barking will not allow him to get his way. He will then decide to do something else. It should be pointed out that this does take a bit of time and it may not be solved right away. One way to help this go faster is to stay as impartial when you take him out as you are when he is whining. Say goodbye inside and then take him outside without looking at him. Put him on his chain and then leave, again without looking at your Great Dane or making a fuss about leaving. It may seem like a strange way to take him out but it will help keep things calm and will reinforce for your dog that you aren't going to pay extra attention to him when he is outside.

Number Three: Give him something to do

Lastly, give your Great Dane something to do when he is in the yard so he does not get bored. Remember that dogs will misbehave when they are bored and that includes whining and barking. Before you leave your dog in the yard, make sure you leave him with things such as shelter, food, water and bedding. This will make sure that all of his daily needs are being met.

In addition to those items, leave him with learning toys, such as Kongs® and chew toys. Also leave him with anything that he finds comforting. The more your dog has to do, the less likely he will get bored and start whining.

In the end, keeping a dog from whining really comes down to the type of interaction you have with him. If you exercise him and spend part of the day socializing with him, your Great Dane will be much happier when you leave him in the yard.
