1About
Ntaria is the name given to the parcel of land which includes Hermannsburg, site of the former mission which was established by German Lutheran missionaries in 1877.
Hermannsburg was the home of the famous artist Albert Namatjira. Born on the mission in 1902, Namatjira met artist Rex Battarbee in 1934 and the result was a series of paintings in Central Australia which evoked the beauty of the region and contributed to interstate interest in the region.
The mission responded to modern changes in 1975 when after requests from the Arranda people, the institutional structures were removed. In 1982 the land was handed back to traditional owners and divided into five separate areas including the Ntaria Land Trust on which the township stands.
The Hermannsburg community is home to the Western Arranda people of Central Australia, located 130kms west of Alice Springs along Larapinta Drive.

In the 2016 Census, there were 605 people in Hermannsburg (State Suburbs) Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people made up 89.9% of the population.The median age of people in Hermannsburg (State Suburbs) was 29 years.

The community is connected to the mains power supply from Alice Springs. Water is supplied from a series of bores along the adjacent range.

1.4Access
1.4.1Road
Access to Ntaria is by a sealed road. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours or 125 km from Alice Springs.
1.4.2Air
Flights from Alice Springs to the community take approximately 35 minutes. The town airstrip is accessible at night during dry weather and is only 3.5 km from Hermannsburg. Contact Council 89567411 regarding all air travel into Hermannsburg.
1.5Local Government
The Wurla Nyinta Local Reference Group consists of 23 senior and respected community members and is the main forum for community management and local service provision issues.
The MacDonnell Regional Council oversees the administration of local Council governance and delivers community services including corporate and some community management, road and building maintenance and waste management.
1.6Land Tenure
Hermannsburg is located within the Ntaria Aboriginal Land Trust and is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976.

Accommodation for Ntaria includes two, two bedroom houses and two three bedroom duplexes, campground including 4 bungalows fully furnished with carports and fenced yards. Enquire at the Ntaria Store for camp and accommodation rates. Campground has full amenities block and several covered areas. Advance booking recommended. Free wifi is available.

4.1Hermannsburg Historic Precinct
The Heritage Precinct consists of 16 remaining buildings and a cemetery on 2.5 hectares of land, and is protected under the NT Heritage Conservation Act 1991. Visitors can roam the precinct to explore the buildings. Locally produced art is available for purchase.

4.2Hermannsburg Potters Aboriginal Corporation
The Hermannsburg Potters are a group of Arrernte women artists who are nationally and internationally renowned for their distinctive terracotta sculptured pots. The organisation is an Aboriginal owned and directed not-for-profit art centre, with all proceeds from sales going directly back to the artists and their community. Art works are available for sale via our website or at the Hermannsburg Historic Precinct. We are open to the public via prior appointment only.

The Tjuwanpa Ranger Group is the longest established of the CLC Ranger groups, having started operations under CDEP arrangements in 2005. The Tjuwanpa Rangers have undertaken numerous fee-for-service projects maintaining and upgrading sections of the Larapinta Trail, managing weeds and fire around tourism infrastructure and around reserves and national parks.

The regional council consists of 13 major remote communities and many outstations, where commercial enterprises such as tourism, mining and pastoral activity takes place. 6.10Tjuwanpa Women Rangers Group
The Tjuwanpa Women Rangers Group are a federally funded organisation that primarily work on women’s country in the field of land management, which entails fire, feral animals, sacred site protection and weed spraying. They also run the Junior Ranger program, teaching young school students about country, fire and flood safety, anti-bullying and language.

Finke Gorge National Park covers an area of 46,000 hectares, and includes the impressive Palm Valley. It is home to a diverse range of plant species many of which are rare and unique to the area, including the Red Cabbage Palm for which the Park is well known. This species of Palm is restricted to this area, having a population of around 3,000 adult plants. The Park and nearby areas hold cultural significance to the Western Arrarnta Aboriginal people as well as displaying evidence of early European settlement of central Australia.
