Dozer Remote Fill Points For In Pit Servicing

Problem

(Brief description of problem and risk factors) / High probability of a fall injury while re-fuelling.
Fuel & oil fill points on opposite sides of machine.
Operator required to climb to fill point with hose in hand.
Problem compounded during wet weather.
Serviceman then required to stand on the uneven track surface & loose material to complete the task.
He then has to climb back down again with hose in hand.
Solution
(Description of practical control measures put in place to solve the problem, i.e. hazard or systems based controls) / A risk assessment on this problem was conducted following an incident, which identified that servicing the dozers was a high risk activity.
Through consultation with operators an idea was generated. This idea was taken by the maintenance department and a solution developed. A trial was run and the solution modified a number of times until a suitable setup was achieved.
The oil and fuel fill points were moved to a single location that is accessible from the ground. This replaced the oil fill points which were previously accessed by climbing onto the track of the dozer (Approx. 2m from ground), they were also on the opposite side of the machine to the fuel fill point which meant that hoses had to be dragged over the machine or machines relocated when servicing.

Benefit

Include any factors affecting successful implementation of solution) / The risk of personal injury while servicing dozers has been greatly reduced. Operators can now service the dozer without the risk of slipping or falling from the tracks. The risk of manual handling injuries has also been reduced as operators do not need to drag hoses over or up onto the dozer.
The relocation of the fill points has also reduced the time it takes to service a dozer. A saving of just one minute on this process equates to a saving of 39 hours per year and this change may save as much as five minutes per service.
