Unit 7

Part 2

  1. Have you ever tried ginger duck? Did you like it?
I tried ginger duck at a friend’s house once. His grandmother made it with lots of rice wine and spices. It was OK, but the taste was really strong.
  2. What do you think of people who tell tall tales?
It really depends on whether they are good story tellers or not. A good story teller can make the most boring tale interesting, whether it is a tall tale or not!
  3. What kind of science, such as biology or chemistry, do you find most interesting?
Every science has something amazing about it, but I think physics is the most interesting. Being able to figure out the math behind things is just fascinating!
  4. What would you do with a hundred million dollars? Would you spend it all flying to the moon?
No way! I’d buy my parents a nice new house and take them on vacations to wherever they wanted to go. I’d also buy a dance club and dance with my friends every night!
  5. Do you think that having more rules at school makes kids better students?
I think rules should make sure that everyone is safe and able to study. But having too many rules makes students miserable. School should be fun and educational at the same time.
  6. What do you know about HIV? Do you know how people can become infected?
I know that it is a virus and that right now there is no cure. You can get it from having sex with a person who is infected without using a condom. You can also get it from touching the blood of an infected person, by sharing needles, or from a blood transfusion.
  7. What do you think about consuming alcohol, either in foods like ginger duck or from just drinking it?
I think it can be a lot of fun but you have to be careful. Alcohol makes you feel really relaxed and many people stop acting responsibly and do things they later regret. No matter how you consume it, you shouldn’t take too much and make sure you are always aware of what you’re doing.
  8. What was a tall tale that you have told?
I went fishing in the ocean with my grandfather one time last summer and caught some fish. When I told my friends about it later, I said I had caught about twenty giant fish. I even said that I saw a whale and a bunch of dolphins, but I hadn’t. I just wanted to make the story more interesting.
  9. Would you rather live a nice long life or a shorter life but with more energy and youth? Why?
I would choose a nice long life so I could be around to see how the world changes. A shorter, more energetic life sounds good, but time goes by so fast when you’re having fun and I’m afraid I’d miss out on too many things. Besides, if you live long enough, scientists may find a cure for old age!
  10. If you could make or change some rules at school, what would you change?
The first thing I’d change is to make sure that the teachers had to treat the students with more respect. I’d also offer more choices in what subjects we study and change the ways the schools judge our success as students. Different students learn differently! We aren’t machines after all!

Part 3

Answer:(1) The young man and a couple of monkeys are sitting up in a tree trying to get away from a big crocodile. They are watching the fight below. (2) The young woman is being very brave. She is fighting with the crocodile with only a knife at the bottom of the tree. (3) Usually in stories, it is the man who would be fighting with the big crocodile and not the woman. She would be hiding in the tree with the monkeys. (4) My aunt runs her own company while my uncle stays home and takes care of their children. She finished college early and began her career before he did. She is also older than he is by a year or two. They are both really happy. My uncle is a great stay-at-home dad!
