A LAYER: Vocabulary (10 points possible) Choose 10 points worth of activities; be sure to check the point values of each one. Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, writing, discussion, reading and doing.

  1. ______(5 points) Choose 15 words from the novel that you do not know; look up their definitions and create flashcards. Learn them.
  1. ______(5 points) Create a crossword using 15 words from the novel. Be sure to include a word bank.
  1. ______(5 points) Create a song/rap that correctly incorporates a total of 10 vocabulary words from the novel. Theirdefinitions should be clear from context of your song! Perform it for the class for an extra 3 points!
  1. ______(5 points) Create analogies using 10 vocabulary words from the novel. Make sure to include a sentence explaining the analogy! If you can’t explain it then it isn’t correct!

B Layer (40 points possible).Choose 40 points worth of activities; be sure to check the point values of each one.Credit is earned for learning, which comes about through listening, writing, discussion, reading and doing.

1. ______(10 points) Develop interview questions you would use if you had the opportunityto interview one of the main characters. Include at least 10 questions. These should be engaging and thought provoking questions.

2.______(15 points) Produce a soundtrack for the book. By selecting and listing songs and artists foreach section, briefly explain each choice (one or two sentences. Include at least 10 songs).

3.______(5 points) Produce the actual soundtrack CD for the above activity.

4.______(15 points) Describe and create the setting for this novel. Include climate, weather, landforms, population and any other elements of nature that would be found in this area. This must be at least 4 paragraphs and include some sort of visual representation. Think BIG!

5.______(10 points) Write a song/rap or poem about the book including literary elements, foreshadowing, conflict, plot and theme.

6.______(5 points) Perform the above activity for the class, your teacher OR another one of Mrs. Lyttle’s classes.

7.______(10 points) Make a collage, either digital (glogster etc.) or hand-drawn/painted/assembled of one of the characters from the book that includes at least 3 direct quotes, 4 traits covers the entire paper and/or canvas.

8.______(15 points) Draw a new cover for the book. Add a synopsis of the story on the back along with at least 3 quote reviews from popular critics. (This is a front and back cover, like a book jacket)

9.______(20 points) Create the front page of a newspaper that covers the events that take place in the novel. Be sure your writing has the tone of an article. Your newspaper should incorporate at least 5 vocabulary words. Make sure you include photos/illustrations, headlines, subtitles, and by lines, maybe even include some advertisements! Take a look at the front cover of the Charlotte Observer to get an idea.

10. ______(15 points) Create a board game that incorporates all the plot stages of the novel. Your board game must include vocabulary; stem words, clear directions on how to play and everything that is needed to play (pieces, board, cards, etc.). You must include at least 10 vocabulary words.

11. ______(20 points) Create a comic book that retells the plot line of the novel. Your comic book must include at least 5 panels per page and must be at least 5 pages long. You can create this digitally or hand draw it. The comic book must include all the stages of plot found within the novel. Someone who has never read the novel should be able to look at your comic book and understand the plot!

12. ______(10 points) Create a Facebook page for one of the characters from the novel. Their Facebook page must include at least 8 photos, information regarding that character’s birthday, relationship status, social wall and newsfeed. Make sure the page is reflective of the character and paints a full picture of that character. Include facts about that character and favorite quotes of that character.

13. ______(15 points) Get creative and create a mobile illustrating 7 different literary aspects of the novel. (plot stages, characterization methods, foreshadowing, conflict, theme, and setting). Make sure you explain how each literary aspect is used within the novel being sure to give examples from the text.

14. ______(10 points) Create an Instagram or Twitter account for a character from the novel. If you are creating an Instagram you must include at least 10 photos with comments. If you are creating a Twitter account you must include at least 10 tweets.

15. ______(15 points) Create a cookbook for the novel. Your cookbook should have an attractive cover and at least 8 recipes. The cookbook can contain dishes directly from the novel and dishes that you create that connect to a character.

16. ______(10 points) Actually create a dish from your cookbook and bring it in to share with the class.

17. ______(10 points) Construct a tourist brochure for one of the locations from the novel, (for Catching Fire: the arena, the Capitol, or District 12. For TheUglies: New Pretty Town, Crumblyville, or the Smoke). Your objective is to encourage people to visit this place. Be as accurate as possible (though you may add details that may not have been disclosed in the novel, as long as it doesn’t take away from the facts in the story). Make sure to include:

-illustrations that accurately depict what this location looks like

-description of what the location is like

-reasons why people should choose your location as a travel destination (You can be sarcastic or do this as a parody, if you’d like)

18. ______(15 points) Create a map of the Arena for the 75th Hunger Games This map should be three dimensional. Make sure you label all the areas, geographical features, location of tribute deaths, and the cornucopia.

19. ______(10 points) Write the first chapter of the next novel in the series. This chapter should be at least a page in length if typed, if handwritten it should be at least 2 pages.

20. ______(15 points) Hovercrafts and hovercars are described in both novels. Research hovercrafts. How are they made? Is it possible to have one today that can transport people? Design your own version of a hovercar, think 3d! Can you create a model of a hovercraft or hovercar? Include details from the text in your design.

21. ______(10 points) Write a chapter that would serve as a prequel to the series.

* For Catching Fire: Imagine Katniss’s parents meeting & falling in love, or Haymitch coming home as a victor from his Games. Be creative!

* For TheUglies: Imagine Shay, Tally and Peris as Littlies. What were there parents like as Uglies? What was Dr. Cable like before she became a special? What were Maddy and Az like as Pretties?

22. ______(15 points) Design and create a t-shirt advertising the novel. Get an actual t-shirt (can be found at Michaels, Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc.) and use fabric and fabric paint to incorporate themes and symbols from the novel. The more “out of the box” you go with this the better!

23. ______(?? Points) Have an idea that isn’t listed on here? Write a 5-7 sentence proposal and turn it in to me and we’ll discuss it. 

Remember this is due on February 14th for a formal grade! We will have limited amounts of class time to complete this project, make sure you’re pacing yourself and working at home.

C Layer: Choose one of the following essay prompts and write a well developed 5 paragraph essay.

1.______(50 points) The mockingjay symbol is found throughout the novel. What is the significance ofthis symbol? Why is it important? Why did Suzanne Collins choose the mockingjay over another type of mutation (think about how mockingjays came to be)? What are some other symbols found throughout literature (other novels you’ve read) and how do they compare/contrast to the mockingjay?

2. ______(50 points) Catching Fire concludes with all the districts rebelling against the Capitol’s government. Should you always do what you’re told by the government? Why or why not? How do you think people who disobey governments should be treated by their communities? By their government? By their peers? Explain.

3. ______(50 points) In the Capitol body modification through plastic surgery is very common. In 2010 there were 13.1 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedure performed. Would you ever have plastic surgery? Why or why not? What do you think about people who get plastic surgery? Do you think by incorporating this into her novel Suzanne Collin’s is making a prediction about the future of our society?

4. ______(50 points) We’ll be looking more at “theme” in literature as third quarter progresses. The theme of a work is the main message about life/society that the author wants to communicate. In a way, it’s the author’s way of stating their beliefs about life/society through fictional writing. What do you think the main theme or message is in Catching Fire. Explain why and how this is the main theme or message in 5 well developed paragraphs. Explain how Suzanne Collins communicated this message in the novel. Make sure to reference the text and cite examples from the text to bolster (back up) your argument. (Some ideas to get you started: government control, rebellion, warfare, admiration, loyalty, manipulation, love, courage, appearances, competition).
