Marking System

The letter grades A, B, C, D and F are given in all credit classes. One semester class is equal to 5 units of credit. Courses taken by transfer students in another country or at unaccredited schools are given credit only instead of grades.

Method of Computing GPA and Class Rank

In accordance with LAUSD guidelines, all courses, including physical education and repeated courses, are

counted in the GPA on a 5-point scale. Only Advanced Placement courses are weighted by being given

incremental points (0.25) per semester class. The passing grades is a D; college bound recommendation is a C. The GPA and class rank include ninth grade and are calculated at the end of junior year and again after the first semester of the senior year. Students with the same GPA are given the same rank.

Other Information About Hollywood High School

“World Famous Hollywood High” is located near the heart of Los Angeles, in the geographical center of a greater metropolitan area of over 10 million people. Economically, our population ranges from middle class to welfare dependent, with 77 percent of our students qualifying for the federal lunch program. Because of its fame throughout the world, the city of Hollywood has become the first stop for thousands of newly-arrived immigrants from all over the world. Our student body is composed of a multitude of nationalities speaking 31 different languages.

We are now on a traditional single-track schedule and have adopted the Small Learning Community model for the organization of our campus. Students apply to become members of one of six programs: the School for Advanced Studies SLC provides a challenging, accelerated curriculum for gifted and high-achieving students; the Media and Technology SLC prepares students to work with new media and technology as a delivery system for academic content in partnership with the Health, Nutrition Arts and Sciences which prepares students for post secondary and career opportunities in the culinary arts, hospitality, travel and tourism, fitness, and business and management; the Multilingual Teacher Career Academy prepares students to enter college upon graduating, to increase their fluency in foreign languages, and to consider careers in education; the long-established Performing Arts Magnet continues to draw students from across the city to hone their talents in acting, dance, and vocal music.

Hollywood High School has a 108 year-old tradition of producing outstanding graduates who have gone on to become a Secretary of State, a Nobel Prize winner, federal judges, Olympic Athletes, composers, inventors, generals, directors, writers, as well as Academy, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winners who are honored in our school’s museum.
