Notes for Nursery Parents

Term 6 2017

Notes for Nursery parents

Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

With the weather improving, please encourage your child to think about the types of clothing they wear, why they need a hat and sun cream and also the importance of drinking more water. Fresh water and milk is provided for the children to help themselves and we are having regular “Squash Breaks” too.

Communication and language.

The sounds that we will cover this term in our Jolly Phonics sessions include e, h, and r. Please encourage your child to listen for the initial sounds in words, and begin to recognise letters in the environment i.e. on road signs. Again, please use the letter’s ‘sound’ rather than its ‘name’.

Physical Development.

We shall continue our dance focus, with June Rose Day in mind. We will begin to explore larger pieces of PE equipment, to encourage climbing and jumping.

With regards to fine motor skills, the children will have the opportunity to experience woodwork. This will be on a 1:1 basis and the children will be taught how to use tools i.e hammers, nails, saws safely.

Literacy

Please continue to read to your child and encourage them to talk about the pictures. The children will continue to look at how their name is formed, and some will learn how to correctly form the letters in their names.

Maths

This term we shall consolidate our number recognition above 10, and count to 20 (and beyond). The children will begin to add small sets of numbers to find the total. Please support this ie at mealtimes ‘one fork and one knife make…’ and so on.

We will also revisit shape as consolidation work.

Understanding of the World.

Please encourage your child to look for changes in the environment and why they think these changes have happened.

Expressive Arts and Design.

Many creative activities will be offered again this half term, both inside and out. Please encourage your child to think about the texture of objects such as food, their toys or plants. Please continue to reinforce colour recognition and think about how some colours are made (pink, purple, grey, orange). Encourage your child to differentiate between the shades of colours light blue, dark blue etc).
