Mixing Fluids

Notes for Facilitators:

You will need: 10 clear plastic cups, 10 sticky labels with names of characters, a carton of longlife milk, starch solution (prepared by heating up in water to form a clear gloop!), a spoon to mix, iodine solution + dropper, 10 chairs at front, a cloth to mop up is a good idea!

Condoms and demonstrator models

The group do not know which character has STI or the consequence of each decision. Do NOTreveal who becomes infected until the 10 scenarios are complete, when the infected individuals will be exposed by the addition of iodine to their body fluids!

Each character is given a cup with some ‘body fluids’ in it. Sid has the cup with the ‘infection’ in it, but the group are NOT told at this stage. After each encounter the couple can decide to

  • have no sex – (shake hands)
  • have protected sex – (Toast glasses)
  • have unprotected sex – (exchange body fluids, mix and share out contents of cups again)

Encounter 1

SID enjoys sex! Sex is fun and to be experienced as often as possible! He is a good-looking bloke and has no trouble attracting girls. Sid has been in trouble with the law a few times, (a bad lad?) and this makes him even more attractive to girls.

Sid expects girlfriends to have sex with him, but refuses to use a condom – he says it spoils the full enjoyment of the experience for him.

ANGELAis having problems with her parents, and is rebelling big time! She feels she is quite mature, and ready for relationships with men. She regularly bunks off school, and has missed out on lots of her education.

Sid seems very attractive to her, she has a real thing about him, and she decides having sex with him would get him interested in her. It would also upset her parents which makes it even more attractive.

SID + ANGELA = UNPROTECTED SEX

(RESULT: SID INFECTS ANGELA)

  • LUKE INFECTED EMMA
  • DANIEL NOT INFECTED BY KATIE
  • GEMMA NOT INFECTED BY DANIEL

The only safe sex is no sex (a valid choice), but sex can be made safer by choosing a partner with care, and use of condoms.

Discuss the impact of alcohol (or other drug) on the ability to practise safe sex.

Sexual contact (vaginal, oral or anal sex, intimate touching etc.)

Involves the exchange of body fluids (semen, vaginal or cervical secretions, blood) which can lead to STI.

Number of sexual partners increases risk; condoms offer some protection – not complete.

Demonstrate correct use of condoms.
