The cnnau is one of the most well- known dances duly performed in west Bengal. While performing this art the participants wear masks and costumes,alongwith the perennial music at the right tempo. The performances are held annually at the festival of the sun god. The men play the roles of women by wearing their masks. The performance commences late at night and continues till dawn. The actors assembles in the open air at ground level without any raised platform. An area of twenty, feet is demarcated for the performers. The drummer sits in a circular area near to the stage. There are separate arrangements for gents and ladies to enjoy the dance. Lord Shiva wears a tiger skin and his son Ganesha dhoti whereas actors representing other gods wear light colored trousers. Stripped and deep colored garments are used for the demons. Spontaneity and vigor are the soul of this dance.
