Unit or Topic: Holding Devices
Assessment Task Due Date: Week 2, Term 3, 2016.
Assessment Task: Boilermakers G-Clamp and Written Communication Folio.
Weighting: 20%
Teacher: Mr Reilly
Industrial Technology syllabus outcomes to be assessed:
5.1.2 A student applies OHS practices to hand tools, machine tools, equipment and processes.
5.2.2 A student identifies, selects and competently uses a range of hand and machine tools, equipment and processes to produce quality practical projects.
5.4.1 A student selects, applies and interprets a range of suitable communication techniques in the development, planning, production and presentation of ideas and projects.
Part A – Practical Project (70%)
Task Description:
You will be supplied with 25mm x 5 mm flat bar pre-cut to the dimensions of your G Clamp drawing. You are required to accurately clean up by filing, mark out, Mig weld and use the lathe to fabricate an adjustable G Clamp that is capable of holding an assortment of materials together.
This task will introduce you to:
· Sketching
· Industrial marking out techniques
· Mig welding techniques
· Lathe techniques
· Threading techniques
· Oxyacetylene start up, use of and shut down procedures
Part B – Written Communication (30%)
You MUST submit a Written Communication folio that documents the process followed to make your project. Your written communication folio must include:
· The folio submitted in an A4 display folder
· A title page with a suitably chosen title, your name, class and a picture of a G Clamp
· A contents page listing the following sections that you are to include in your design and management folio.
The Design Brief: (5 marks)
· The design brief is to be written so that it clearly states what the proposed project is to look like when completed
· Establish and list some criteria you see as essential for the successful completion of the project.
· This section should fill at least one page
Research and Information Collection: (5 marks)
· This section documents the collection of a wide range of information related to the project. You should aim to investigate alternative materials, processes and equipment that could have been used to produce your G Clamp
· This section should fill at least one page.
Development of design Ideas: (10 marks)
· This section should document any ideas you had in relation to the design of the G Clamp
· Use drawings, sketches and notes explaining the possible design and alternatives you considered
· This section should fill at least one page
Selection and Justification of Resources: (10 marks)
· Explain why you have selected your final design and list the reasons why you rejected the other options
· Include a full scale drawing of your chosen design
· An orthographic drawing of your project, making sure you add dimensions and appropriate labelling
· This section should fill at least one page
Construction Steps, Techniques and Processes: (20 marks)
· Include a table that summarises the timber components used to construct you project
· List the sizes of each component ( cutting list )
· Write out specific steps used to construct your G Clamp
· A list of hand tool and machine tools used during the production process
· This section should fill at least three page
Evaluation: (10marks)
· Write an appropriate final evaluation that addresses any problems you may have experienced or any mistakes you made
· Then outline how you solved or fixed these problems
· Also discuss any possible design changes you could have made.
· Then make comment on your personal work habits e.g. good or poor use of allocated time
· This section should fill at least one page.
Marking Criteria: Students will be assessed on their ability to
· Design a functional storage component
· Follow marking out, cutting and folding procedures
· Produce a quality project that is finished to a high metal working standard
· Present a quality folio that adheres to the marking criteria.
