The Nurseries We May Visit

Haskell's Nursery 787 Shawmut Avenue, New Bedford. Outdoor hardy bamboos are available and some for inside too. Allen C. Haskell Horticulturists Inc. is a family owned and operated business founded in 1953 by the late Allen C. Haskell (1935-2004), who was a world famous landscaper. Their specialty is a distinctive landscaping service and interesting plants both for outdoor and interior spaces. Their services are in demand at notable locations around the country and around the world. The plants that they carry are not only beautifully displayed but are rare and unusual. Visit their web site for a virtual tour at

Sylvan Nursery 1028 Horseneck Road, Westport. Stock includes running and clumping bamboos, some in very large tubs. During the past 40 years the nursery has grown from being a part-time hobby to a business housed in 24 greenhouses on 300 acres in six locations.A visit is well worth the experience since they are probably the largest re-wholesaler of nursery stock in New England. Much of their nursery stock is quite large landscape sizeplants. It is almost like going to an arboretum, but you can go home with some of it.

Quansett Nurseries 794 Horseneck Road, Dartmouth. There is some bamboo in the yard but not much for sale. Well worth the visit, however, because Fred Dabney's wholesale collection of annuals, herbs, perennial and stepables groundcovers ishuge. One of his specialties is annuals which can be put outin early May. Quansett Nurseries, Inc. is a wholesale grower of container plant material that started in 1980. Today they are spread over fifteen acres. Most of the plants sold are propagated at the nursery. They are always searching for new and old varieties that have ornamental and environmental appeal. They have many sources of plant material including the Arnold Arboretum, other nurseries, and private collections. Stock includes a wide variety of plants for difficult environments such as the

seashore and wetlands. Quansett believes in a flexible approach to the market place and experiment, not only with new varieties, but also with new methods of packaging and presentation.

AvantGardens Chris and Kathy Tracey, 710 High Hill Rd.Dartmouth. Several bamboos are offered for sale, and there is a lovely stand of yellow groove at the parking lot. They have an incredible collection of perennials, many of which are very rare or hard to find. AvantGardens is a small, family run nursery that propagates what they sell. They grow a tremendous variety of plants, but they do not propagate in great quantities. AvantGardens aims to cater to the more adventurous gardeners out there who have both patience and foresight.
