North West Association AGM and Spring Meeting

Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington, Saturday 23rdApril 2016 12 noon-4.30pm

Dear NW Churchill Fellow,

We have finally got there and our long-anticipated Haworth Gallery event is organised! I am very pleased to invite you to our NW Churchill AGM & Spring meeting at the Haworth Gallery in Accrington on Saturday 23rd April 2016 from 12 noon to 4.30pm. This will be a rather special occasion as I step down from the Chair and hand over to Doug Jackson, who holds The Haworth Tiffany Glass Collection very dear to his heart, having spent his fellowship tracing the historic trail of Joseph Briggs, the Lancashire Tiffany Glass collector who gifted the collection to the museum. So of course Doug will be sharing with us some of the finer moments of his fellowship and his work on Tiffany glass to date, and will have copies of his recently published book at hand for us to see. You will also have the opportunity to view the gallery collections from 12 noon with a mini- guided tour.

Accrington might not be top of your list as a Saturday afternoon destination, but the Tiffany Glass collection is really something very special, as are our speakers for the afternoon. As always, we have invited some of our newest members to tell us of their recent travels and I am very pleased to welcome three of our 2015 Fellows who will be telling and showing an eclectic mix of experiences, from stick insects via letter setting to prison reform. Please do come along to learn, enjoy and contribute to the ever increasing wealth of knowledge that our Churchill fellowships bring to us all and our wider communities.

I do hope you will be tempted by our programme for the day:

2015 Fellows Speakers

David Armes (2015) is a letterpress artist, printmaker and educator. For his 2015 Fellowship he spent 11 weeks in the US visiting studios and printers. Also during Spring and Summer 2015 he was an artist-in-residence at The Shop, a secondhand shop and café in the district centre of Nelson, Lancashire where he recreated a temporary letterpress facility that functioned as a living/working installation and as a print studio. David said of his Nelson experience: “Letterpress printing has a definite performative aspect – the action of using a printing press is almost like a strange slow dance, repetitive and constant. As I worked, head down at the table repairing the press and cleaning type, slowly and diligently, visitors would creep up and around me. Sometimes people would ask questions, sometimes they’d just watch for a while. I enjoyed these moments before a conversation when curiosity hung in the air.” You can learn more of David’s experiences at and

Andy Laidlaw (2015) is a Prison Governor currently working as Head of Reducing Re-offending at HMP Risley. Prior to his trip he was working at HMP Liverpool as Head of OMU.He has worked for Public Sector Prisons for 18 years, starting as a Prison Officer at HMP Wandsworth. He has spent time in most areas of corrections and has a particular interest in why some offenders seem to be unable to break the cycle of their offending.

Andy traveledto the USA in October and November of 2015 primarily to research the impact of effective mentoring on community safety and reducing re-offending.He discovered a plethora of examples of good practice and also some quite pioneering work in the most unlikely of places. You can read more about Andy’s work at

Beth Ripper (2015) is currently employed as the national waste inventory manager for the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. Beth recently travelled to Queensland, Australia to photograph and collect data about phasmids (stick insects) in their natural habitats. The expedition aims were to generate high quality macro photographs of the insects, collect data about them and share the findings with relevant research groups and members of the public. She hopes that the expedition will help others in the UK to learn about insects, to appreciate their global ecological importance and to take part in insect discovery and conservation.
