North Texas was surrounded by several disasters last year; the plant explosion in West, Texas, tornados in Granbury TX, Moore OK, and Reno OK. Countless lives were ripped apart during these disasters. In the midst of this chaos and pain, the church has an incredible opportunity to share the love of Christ in word and deed. As 1 John 4:19 says “We love because He first loved us.”

Perhaps your congregation has responded to disasters in the past. Perhaps members wanted to, but didn’t know how. The needs during a disaster are great, and we can do more by partnering together.

To better prepare ourselves to respond to disasters, LCMS Disaster Response offers a number of Disaster Response Training Workshops. At the upcoming workshop led by Pastor Merritt, the focus will be on post-disaster field work training to include:

  • Debris Cleanup
  • Muck Out
  • Tarp & Patch

If you have not yet been certified as part of a Lutheran Emergency Response Team (LERT), completion of this training workshop will also allow you receive your LERT credentials which can helpindividuals/groups gain access to a disaster site and network with local officials.

The workshop will be held on May 17th from 8:30am – 4:30pm, at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, in Flower Mound, TX. Doors will open at 8am for sign-in and payment. To register, go to and click on the “Disaster Response Training” link. You can register as an individual or as a group. Cost is $35/person paid at the door and covers training materials, coffee/bagels and lunch. Childcare is available upon request.
