DUAL CREDIT INFORMATION for 2012-2013

*Dual credit refers to courses taught by NCTC in which students are eligible to receive college and high school credit concurrently. Courses are limited to those applicable to high school requirements.

Eligibility requirements for dual credit enrollment:

  1. Only high school students who have met eligibility requirements

(academic and behavioral) and who are recommended by their

high school principal are eligible. Students must be on the recommended or distinguished graduation plan.

  1. To be eligible for dual-credit courses, high school students must

take all three sections of the THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment). The following scores must be met on those sections:

  1. A minimum passing score of 220 on the writing section and

a minimum passing score of 230 on the reading section to take

any non-mathematics courses and

  1. A minimum passing score of 270 on the math section to take any

dual credit math courses.

Mrs. Routh has information about the THEA and test dates OR

  1. Students may be exempted from taking the THEA if they meet the

minimum qualifying scores on the following assessment tests:

  1. ACT: Composite- 23; at least 19 on English and Math
  2. SAT: Combined- 1070; at least 500 on Verbal and Math
  3. 10th grade or exit-level TAKS (11th grade): 2200 in Math and/ or English/Language Arts with a 3 on the essay portion.
  1. The dual credit class load of a high school student will not exceed two

dual-credit courses per semester or summer session.

  1. High school students must have a minimum high school grade point

average of a “B” with the same in courses for which they wish to enroll.

High school students must also have passed all portions of the most recent TAKS test to qualify.

  1. High school students with prior disciplinary or attendance problems,

as defined by the Texas Education Code, section 25.92 Minimum

Attendance for Class Credit, are not eligible to enroll in dual-credit courses.

  1. Students must maintain a “C” or better in dual credit courses completed. If a student scores below a “C” in any dual credit course, the student will not be eligible to enroll in the following semester courses.
  1. Students must submit the following for admission to NCTC and enrollment

in dual-credit courses:

  1. completed admission application for NCTC
  2. current high school transcript
  3. assessment scores (THEA, TAKS, ACT, or SAT)
  4. NCTC concurrent enrollment form signed by the high school principal or counselor recommending student for enrollment

into dual-credit courses.

  1. Seniors who plan to take dual credit English, government, and economics must take all of these at the same campus (i.e., all at Ponder High School or all at NCTC).

Ponder High School currently accepts the following courses for dual credit:

These courses are allowed for seniors for the 2011-2012 school year:

Economics 2301Principles of Macroeconomics

Government 2305American National Government

Psychology 2301Introduction to General Psychology

Sociology 1301Introduction to Sociology

These courses are allowed for juniors for the 2011-2012 school year:

HIST 1301US History to 1865

HIST 1302US History from 1865

For the 2012-2013 school year, some of the dual credit courses will be offered here at PHS. The plan for the fall semester is to offer English 1301 on Mondays and Wednesdays and Economics 2301 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 noon until 1:20 PM. Fridays would be a study hall for those senior students. In the spring semester, English 1302 would be on Mondays and Wednesdays and Government 2305 would be on Tuesdays and Thursdays; study hall would be on Fridays. US History will be scheduled every day during both semesters. A minimum of 15 students is required for each class to be offered.

Tuition and fees are $246 per class per semester ($82.00 a semester hour). In addition to tuition and fees, the required books are to be purchased by the student for each course at an estimated $50.00 minimum; some courses require books that cost more. **Mrs. Routh has a scholarship application for dual credit students from NCTC. The application is due to NCTC by April 15 for fall and October 15 for spring. See her for a copy or access a copy on-line at under the dual credit link on the homepage. Students may also apply for grant funds from the Ponder Education Foundation for dual credit courses. The application for the grant can be found on the Ponder ISD website

and must be turned in to Mrs. Routh at least 45 days before payments to NCTC are due.

Something to remember- if you take the English, economics, government, and/or history courses in place of those here at Ponder High School and

fail the courses at NCTC, you will not graduate unless you can make these

up before your graduation date.

DO NOT go to NCTC to register without your packet; you will not be able to register!
