POOL RULES

  1. No running on the pool deck.
  2. No horseplay of any kind.
  3. Stay off the starting blocks.
  4. No diving into the shallow end, always enter feet first-carefully.
  5. Be quiet when in the pool area, listen and follow directions.
  6. Stay off the lanes lines and go under not over them.
  7. When using the diving boards, always exist pool by the closest ladder. When using the high dive, remember to swim straight out and then over to the ladder.
  8. No inwards or gainers off the boards.
  9. Only one person on the diving board at a time.
  10. One bounce on the end of the diving board.
  11. Wait until the diver in front of you is at the ladder before you dive off.
  12. Wait on the deck until the diver before you has gone off the board.
  13. No swimming in the diving area.
  14. One long loud whistle means EMERGENCY, exist the pool immediately and go to the bleachers.
  15. Two short whistles means the teacher is trying to get a swimmer’s attention.

FOLLOW THESE RULES AND ANY OTHERS GIVEN BY ANY TEACHER.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN FOR THE POOL

One Teacher/Lifeguard:

  1. Responding teacher activates EAP- ONE LONG LOUD WHISTLE. Teacher should climb down ladder and perform appropriate rescue.
  1. Students should be immediately exist the pool and go to the bleachers.
  1. Send assigned student aide to call 911 or nurse (numbers should be posted by phone, along with the address of pool).
  1. Send assigned student aide to office to get Security.

Two Teachers/Lifeguards:

  1. Responding teacher activates EAP- ONE LONG LOUD WHISLTE. Teacher should climb down ladder and perform appropriate rescue.
  1. Second teacher should clear pool, assist with rescue, send assigned students to call 911 or nurse and get Security if necessary.

Three or more Teachers/Lifeguards:

  1. Responding teacher activates EAP- ONE LONG LOUD WHISLTE. Teacher should climb down ladder and perform appropriate rescue.
  1. Closest teacher should assist with rescue.
  1. Other teacher(s) should clear pool, call 911 or nurse and send assigned student to get Security if necessary.

** IF A SPINAL INJURY IS SUSPECTED, MAINTAIN INLINE STABLIZATION IN THE WATER UNTIL EMS ARRIVES. IF VICTIM IS NOT BREATHING OR HAS NO PUSLE, REMOVE IMMEDIATELY FROM WATER AND BEGIN RESCUE BREATHING OR CPR.

Each hour reliable students should be pre-assigned the duties of calling 911 or nurse and getting Security. Assign other students as back up in case other student is absent.

It is strongly recommended to have at least two teachers in the pool area.

A pocket mask, gloves and first aid kit should be quickly assessable.

  1. bobs- fully submerge head and blow bubbles, slow and easy, 1 to 5 times.
  2. Front float- in waist deep water, bend at waist, with arms extended, but face in water, gently push feet off bottom, float for 5 to 10 sec.
  3. Front glide- arms out straight in front of body with hands together, put face in water, push up and forward off the bottom into streamline position, glide on surface at least 2to3 body lengths. Water level on head should be between eye brows and hair line in order to maintain proper body position.
  4. Glide w/Flutter kick-perform glide, relax legs, knees and ankles, kick starts at hips, with the power coming from the down beat, range of kick is 12 –15 inches.
  5. Practice with kickboards if time. When using kickboard, keep arms straight w face in water.

  1. Front crawl stroke arms: practice in stationary position in waist deep water. Bend at waist, face in water, arms extended in front. Practice one arm at a time separately and then alternating.
  2. Rhythmic breathing: practice is stationary position in waist deep water, may hold on the side of pool.
  3. Coordinate arms and breathing.
  4. Practice with kick, with or without kickboard.

  1. Arm action- alternate arm pulls, elbow bent on recovery, hand enters water in front of shoulder, extend arm fully, pull down full length of body until thumb brushed thigh.
  2. Breathing- Face in water, water between eyebrows and hairline, blow bubbles with mouth and nose, turn head to side, take small breath, return face to water .Do Not Lift head, opposite ear stays in water.
  3. Coordination- breath every arm cycle. As one arm pulls, roll slightly to side, turn head, take a quick breath, as arm enter water, return face to water and blow bubbles.
  4. Kick with face in water, pull one arm and breath, return hand to extended position, pull other arm. Do one arm separately before alternating w/breathing.

  1. Back float- work in partners, stand behind partner who is submerged to should depth. Tell partner to look up, slowly arch back, lean back and relax. Muscle must be relaxed in order to float. Place hands under partners back for support. Make sure head is back, chin up and ears in water. Hold for 5-10 sacs. Gradually lessen support. To recover- raise, bend hips (like sitting in a chair) and place feet on bottom.
  2. Back Glide- repeat beginning steps of back float except push off the bottom of pool or wall. Extend hips and knees to streamline body. Glide 2-3 body lengths.
  3. Glide w/ kick- glide to get body horizontal and begin kick. Keep ankles loose and floppy, kick starts at hip. Power comes from the upward kick, push the water up using tops of feet. Kick should churn the surface of the water.

  1. Sculling- lay on back, hands by hips, elbows bent, extend wrists so fingers point up slightly. Trace a figure 8 pattern leading with the hand, make the movement smooth and keep hands under water.

  1. Back crawl arm action (beginners may use a straight arm pull)- the power phase- arm pulls down to thigh, at the end of the pull turn hand over, palm down, pushing water toward feet.
  2. Recovery phase- lift straight, relaxed arm out of water, leading with thumb, (palm in), rotate hand out so little finger enter water overhead, just outside the shoulder.

OBJECTIVE: The SWD various skills in deep water (with flotation or support if necessary)
ACTIVITIES / CUE PHRAZES/INSTRUCTIONS
Intro: Talk about why it is important to be comfortable and perform basic skills in deep water. / -Ask the students to brainstorm reasons.
Fitness: practice front and back crawl in shallow water. / - Check for proper technique, give feedback and correction.
Lesson Focus: Practice new & previously learned skills in deep water.
  1. Front float

  3. Jumping in and return to wall
  4. Changing directions
/ 1 & 2 – student can hold on to the gutter, rescue tube, kickboard, or noodle for support. Encourage them to do it unsupported, without your help.
3. Student jumps into water from side keeping arms by sides and legs straight. Some student may need to sit down and slide in as a lead-up.
4.Changing direction- swim out a few strokes and return to wall. Use front and back strokes, teacher should be in water to help student turn around.

Personal water safety skills and emergency skills.
  1. Rolling over from front to back and back to front. This skill is used to rest on back if tired.
  2. Reaching and throwing assists.
**Emphasize to students NOT to go in after an active victim unless trained to do so. /
  1. Rolling over- practice swimming, rolling over from front to back and back to front. Tell student to lead with the head.
  2. Use various items around the pool to practice these assists.
-When using reaching assist, remember to brace yourself so you don’t get pulled in.
-An arm or leg can be use if no equipment is available, remember to hang on the side or ladder so you don’t get pulled in.
-Closure: Discuss pool/water safety rules
-Learn to swim

-Enter feet first when you can’t see the bottom or don’t know the depth

  1. Elementary Backstroke arms-start on back with arms at sides, hands run along side to arm pit, extend out to side (shoulder level), press down to sides to return to beginning position.
  2. Treading- use sculling movement (figure 8) with arms out to side but under the water, palms down. Use a wide, slow kick,
  3. Feet first, tuck or pike
  4. Beginners can use a wider flutter kick and wide breaststroke arms
  5. Practice strokes and skills in deep water
