Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated November 30 – December 7, 2008
(Number 100)
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Winter is here. We had a good snowfall this week but it is melting now on the weekend as the temperature is above freezing. The two main rivers we fish now are the Zymoetz (Copper) and Kalum. Both these rivers have good runs of Steelhead in them. These fish will be wintering over and spawning in the spring. The Copper is borderline fishable at the bottom end, conditions might be better higher up. The road has been plowed and sanded but watch out for those slippery spots. It is a good idea to bring your tow rope, bag of sand, shovels and chains along just in case you end up in the ditch. The Kalum River is clean from top to bottom. The Lakelse River at the top end is in good shape but a little on the high side. Fishing for Steelhead this year has been fair. There are rivers north of us with good runs of Steelhead also. I am referring to the Cranberry, Meziadin and Bell Irving Rivers. Trout fishing on the Kitimat River is very good right now and winter springs are showing up in the bay. Check out the Ron Wakita report below.

NOTICE: BOOK EARLY and save money! The Canadian Dollars is low right now. Which way will the Canadian Dollar and the exchange rates go? The answer is no one knows. The Canadian Dollar is low at this time (as of Nov 29) A typical Weekly Lodge Package for 7 days/6 nights/5 days of guided fishing will cost $3500 Canadian Dollars in 2009. With the current exchange rate it will now cost $2824 in United States Dollars. A savings of $676. I would suggest you BOOK NOW before exchange rates go the other way. Cast here for current money conversion rates. Contact me anytime for package details.
Many people book three trips per year to our area; one trip in the spring (March-April-May), one trip in the summer (June-July-August) and one trip in the fall (September-October-November). They love having the same guide but fishing for different fish in different areas.
Be sure to check out my website at www.noelgyger.ca for news bulletins, mid week fishing updates, conservation, my history, quality waters strategy, special guided fishing trips, video clips, scenic river photos, wildlife photos and others, comments from past guests, informational articles, archived fishing reports from 1996 through 2002 and a sportfishing market place. I hope it meets with your entire satisfaction.

Skeena River: is in good shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon may be slow as most runs have gone through although some Steelhead winter over in the main stem. Most of these good runs are found upstream from Terrace in the Skeena 4 section. Some sections have chunks of floating ice and snow.
Kalum River: is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. My plan was to go fishing on Friday with my boat but decided not to take the chance of getting stuck at the put-in with all the snow we’ve had.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
Zymoetz (Copper) River: is “slightly” coloured up and fishing for Steelhead may be slow.
Area River Records: Chinook Salmon: Skeena River, 92.5-pounds; Kalum River, 85-pounds; Kitimat River, 74-pounds; Steelhead: Skeena River, 45-pounds; Coho Salmon: Skeena River, 27-pounds.
CURRENT REPORT and summary for Northern Coastal Rivers:
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters
KITIMAT RIVER: Trout fishing on the Kitimat River continues to be good. Ariel Kuppers of Reliable Guide and Charters caught an exceptional cutthroat on Wednesday. This beauty had to be 4lbs, estimated Ariel. Ariel was going to release it but it was bleeding whichis one of the hazards of fishing with bait. A 4lb cutthroat is a very big trout for the Kitimat River and it would have been nice for it to have been released to perpetuate the genetics.
Hirsh Creek is also starting to produce trout. A group of fly fishers reported doing really good on Hirsh Creek this week. They were using egg patterns and fry patterns which are typically the flys of choice this time of year.
December3. Ariel Kuppers. 4-pound Cutthroat Trout
DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Cosby Smith of Cosby Smith's Fishing Adventures caught four Winter Springs this week in the Kitimat Harbour. This iswelcome information for a small but dedicated group of anglers.Winter Chinook fishing is agreat fisheryto fish. The most challengingelement of the fishery is the timing especially in the harbour. These feeder chinookmigrate the Douglas Channel following feedof mostly herring. They simply show up in the harbour whenever they show up.Typically they start in late Octoberor November but this year appears to be a little later. Now that they have started they should hang out until February or March whena larger group of herring migrate into the harbour to spawn.
These feeder chinookare usually smaller than the spawning stocksthat return inJune but are themost "tasty". They contain a higher fat contentwhich gives them a richer taste. They are preferred by many of the locals especially the folks from the Kitimaat Village.
Stay tuned to this report for updates.
Tight Lines
and Bon Appetite!

Fishing Report from: Nicholas Dean Lodge
This week we are pleased to announce some very exciting news. Actually, we're ecstatic! Beginning April 20, 2009, we will be teaming up with Alf and Simone Leslie of Yellow Cedar Lodge, to provide our clients with the very best in dining and accommodations in northwest British Columbia. Yellow Cedar Lodge is an impressive facility that is situated on the banks of the majestic Skeena River, on the outskirts of Terrace. Here, the lodge sits amidst impressive mountain views and a wilderness setting - an ideal spot for anglers to relax in comfort after a great day of fishing. The lodge itself is appropriately named given its construction of beautifully crafted yellow cedar posts and beams, which give it a unique character and class of its own.
The lodge features a large dining area and adjoining bar, a mixture of private single and double beds with ensuite washrooms, a bar/games room, lounge, gym with cardio equipment and weights, a sauna, hot tub and a large covered porch overlooking the river. Dining is a major highlight at Yellow Cedar Lodge, as Alf is a master Red Seal Chef who goes to great length in providing gourmet, home cooked meals. Using the freshest ingredients, Alf makes home made breads and desserts, and prepares sumptuous meals including wild Salmon and Halibut from the Pacific Ocean, only a short distance away. Look for more information about Yellow Cedar Lodge in upcoming reports, or, visit our blog site at nicholasdean.blogspot.com to see additional photos of this first class facility!
Current fishing report:
If you enjoy crisp, sunny winter weather, you'd probably enjoy the local conditions in Terrace right now - but not so much if you're an angler. Though it's nice to be out on the river when there's blue skies and no rain, temperatures have dropped below zero, making Steelhead and Trout fishing just a little tougher, owing to iced guides and frozen reels (and hands!). Still, if you can take advantage of the days when temperatures rise above the freezing mark, the fish are certainly there and will take a well presented fly or lure. This time of year, water temperatures are also dropping substantially, so looking for fish in different water types than you would in the Summer or Fall is a major consideration. Deep, slower moving pools are often great places to target Steelhead this time of year, provided that your presentation is close to the bottom. Trout fishing for Bull Trout, Dolly Varden, Cutthroat and Rainbows can be very productive as well, and fishing either small single egg patterns, heavily weighted nymphs, or large streamers is the best way to target these fish. Until next week, tight lines and screaming reels...
