NO. R-30. House concurrent resolution commemorating the Sanderson Farm’s bicentennial anniversary.

Whereas, family farms are the historic backbone of Vermont agriculture, and

Whereas, families can take great pride in maintaining their farms over the course of many generations, and

Whereas, one of Chittenden County’s most historic farms is the Sanderson Farm in Milton which has been under the dedicated stewardship of the Sanderson family for two centuries, representing eight generations of this hardworking family, and

Whereas, John Sanderson established his farm in 1804, and he transferred it to his son Charles Proctor Sanderson who continued the family’s agricultural role on the islands, and

Whereas, Charles Lucius Sanderson inherited the farm in 1917 from his father, and

Whereas, in 1940, upon inheriting the farm from his father, Charles Orlow Sanderson began his quarter-century tenure as the Sanderson farm’s proprietor, and

Whereas, his son Loren Sanderson inherited the farm in 1985, and

Whereas, Loren and his wife Joan (Cadreact) raised their children Dale and Linda on the farm, and

Whereas, Dale and his wife Linda (Valyou) live on the farm with their two sons, William and Scott, and

Whereas, Loren’s daughter Linda (Sanderson) Ballard and her husband James, their two sons, Eric and Edward, and grandson Ryan Anderson are all actively involved in the support of this continuing farming enterprise, and

Whereas, members of the Sanderson family support farming by being active members of the Grange, and

Whereas, the Sanderson family supports historical treasures by maintaining the 1820-era horse barn, the 1831 farmhouse in which Loren still resides, a barn built about 1878, and a 1922 house that Dale and his family currently occupy, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly is pleased to commemorate the Sanderson Farm’s bicentennial anniversary, and be it further

Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Loren Sanderson, Dale Sanderson, and Linda Sanderson Ballard.
