Alva “Buzz” Baker, M.D.is the Director of the Center for the Study of Aging at McDanielCollege and an adjunct professor at the college.

Diane Martin, Ph.D. is the Academic Director of the Center for the Study of Aging at McDanielCollege and a visiting Assistant Professor of Gerontology at the college.

Credits

No college credit will be earned nor can this program be transferred to any program of study at McDanielCollege.

Target Audience

This program is specifically designed for individuals with a high school education or equivalent, with an associate’s degree or credits towards such a degree and/or individuals with earned credits towards a Bachelor’s degree.

Description

Through a series of six 3-hour workshops (total completion time 18 hours), participants will gain professional and personal knowledge regarding the process of aging from a bio-psycho-social perspective.

Objectives

Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the needs and wants of one of the fastest growing segments of society, the population of adults over age 60.
  • Improve attitudes toward the older population,
  • Improve compassion toward elders, and
  • Improve communication between service-related employees and older adults.
  • More fully understand the physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges of aging
