Thank you for your interest in NMSU-Carlsbad’s Surgical Technology Program. The SURG Program is a 2-year Associate Degree program with one start in January of each year. Applications for the May 2018 cohort are available and will be due May 15, 2018.
The Surgical Technology Program is a strenuous program requiring your full time commitment and attention. It is a limited access program and accepts no more than 15 students; as a result, the selection process is taken very seriously.
Selection criteria are as follows:
- GPA of no less than 2.0
- Biographical essay stating why you want to become a Surgical Technologist. This should be in 5 paragraph essay format;
- Submit copies of college transcripts: Completion of pre-requisite courses with a grade of “C” or better or current enrollment and satisfactory progress with completion prior to program start; Any additional academic, occupation/allied health or science related courses taken and passed with a “C” or better are viewed favorably;
Application: Complete SURG “Application for Admission and Student Health Record.” The application must be submitted with biographical essay and physician’s documented immunization record.
Immunizations: You are required to provide the Surgical Technology Program Director with a copy of your immunization record containing proof (titer, immunization, or physician’s documentation of illness) of the following immunizations and proof of Tuberculin screening
· Proof of Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunity as shown by (a) physician documented history of disease, (b) documentation of two immunizations, OR (c) a serum titer confirming immunity
· Proof of Hepatitis B Vaccination (a) first two doses administered (the third vaccination in the series must be completed by the end of the provisional semester) OR (b) a serum titer confirming immunity
· Proof of MMR vaccination – Students must provide proof that he/she received at least two Measles vaccinations, one Mumps vaccination and one rubella vaccination OR (a) serum titer confirming immunity of Measles, Mumps, Rubella (b) proof that student was born prior to January 1, 1957 or immunity as shown, (c) physician documented history of disease
· Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination (if applicable)
· Proof of Tetanus-Diphtheria Pertussis Vaccination within last 10 years.
· Proof of PPD Screening within one year Note: If indurated/reactive, must attach a copy of chest x-ray report done within 3 months of matriculation
CPR: You must submit a copy of current CPR certification (American Heart Association, BLS for Healthcare Providers) with your application.
ONLY UPON ACCEPTANCE INTO SURG PROGRAM: Background/Drug Urinalysis (ONLY required if accepted into the program, not for submission of application)
Upon acceptance into the SURG program, a background check, and drug urinalysis will be required. Certain convictions may result in denial by a clinical site and/or restrict employment in the healthcare field.
A 10-panel urine drug screen is also required.
