All grades, 6-8 will have Health and Fitness for a Semester (total of 18 weeks)

PHILOSPHY:

Health and Physical Education at Northley is based on teaching the students the value and importance of leading a healthy lifestyle-with the philosophy of a healthy mind in a healthy body.

PREPARATION:

·  **Sneakers must have rubber, non-marking soles to protect the new gym floor.

·  Proper sneakers must be worn and tied appropriately for every PE class and have the ability to be worn outside. No boots/UGGs, dress shoes, or sandals.

·  All students are required to wear appropriate clothing (sneakers, t-shirts, shorts) for every Physical Education class. Students may also wear sweatpants/shirts when weather or temperature permits.

·  Clothing worn to school may not be worn to PE class.

·  3 unexcused days without sneakers or a bathing suit will result in a failure for the marking period

Listed below are required for Health class: Grades 6-8

·  Pen or pencil

·  Reading Counts book

·  One subject notebook

·  Guided notes may be provided as needed

·  Assignment book.

PARTICIPATION:

Each student is expected to participate to the best of his/her ability in every class. This means being an active part of the class.

·  Limited make up dates for PE will be before or after school. Please see your teacher for more information.

·  Students that do not participate in their Physical Education class that day may NOT participate in their school athletic events

POOL

Ø  Only a medical note can excuse a student from the swimming unit.

MEDICAL EXCUSES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION

·  A parental note may be brought each time a student needs to be excused from PE class. No more than 3 days of PE classes can be excused by a parent’s note in a marking period. Students will need to make up the days before or after school. Please see your PE teacher for more information.

·  For a student to be excused from PE for medical reasons, the student must submit a written doctor’s note to the school nurse for the dates for which he/she is to be excused. A return date to PE must be included in the medical note.

CLASS RULES: All school rules are in effect at ALL times (see the NMS Student/Parent handbook for more detailed information

·  For the safety of yourself and others do not wear watches, rings, earrings or body piercings.

·  Due to severe allergies to aerosol products, NO AEROSOL PRODUCTS will be allowed (i.e. axe, aerosol deodorant). Please note, non-aerosol deodorant and perfumes are allowed.

·  No glass containers, food, or drinks will be allowed in the locker rooms or on the gym floor. This will result in an automatic detention.

·  You will need to be in the classroom by the late bell.

·  Always communicate with respect.

·  Each student will be able to purchase their own lock for their years at NMS through the main office for $5. These are the only locks that students can use. Students will be assigned a permanent small locker for use during PE classes. School lockers are provided as a convenience and provide only limited security.

·  Conditions of an agreement on use of school lockers:

Ø  Parents assume the risk and bear the loss and financial responsibility of any contents including school locks and books.

Ø  Students may not share lockers

Ø  Students must use a NMS lock

Ø  Students may only use the locker assigned to them

GRADING

·  General grading procedures can be found in the student hand book

·  The health and physical education grade will be combined and averaged as one grade. The number of your total earned class points divided by the total possible earned points will be your calculated percentage of the health and physical education grade.

·  Grade will be based on the following:

Ø  Daily assessments (Preparation, participation, daily objective, and citizenship)

o  Cutting class will result in an 0 for the day

Ø  Unit assessments (Skills work/comprehension, projects, test, etc…)

***Daily & Unit assessments will be graded on an individual basis as needed

Ø  Homework

HEALTH: Health will be taught in grades 6-8.

Ø  Parent letters explaining the 7th grade Puberty Unit and 8th grade STD/HIV/AIDS Unit are available on teacher webpages. Please contact your student’s Health teacher with questions or concerns.

FITNESS ROOM:

Ø  All grades will the five different types of machines in the fitness room throughout their time in Physical Education class. These machines include one treadmill, four ellipticals, four stationary bikes, one rowing machine, and one hand cycle. Physical Education teachers will review the proper use and safety of each machine. Written directions for each machine can be found in the fitness room and on our teacher webpages.
