Support Package B: Social/Communication Impairment

Dear Network Member,

Please find below the package of support that the department need to put in place for students who have declared a social or communication difficulty. Please note that some students may require an enhanced package of support in which case you will get an individual support memo for each one of these students, detailing their individual needs.

  • Permission to record lectures whilst in attendance
  • Access to class material at least 24hr in advance where practicable[1],
  • Access to more frequent one-to-one meetings with personal adviser if needed
  • additional time to respond to oral questions in workshops, tutorials, seminars or appointmentswhere practicable
  • Exemption from being asked to read passages out loud in class if needed and requested
  • Available upon request and with some input from the Disability & Dyslexia Services,, help and advice with discussing your disability with:

1.the host institution/ work placement abroad (applicable to Modern Languages students, students taking part in the Study Aboard programme),

2.the compulsory work placements (Health and Social Care Students, others for whom work placements are part of the curriculum).

3.an optional year in Business / Industry (Department of Management and Computer Science) .

In addition, students will receive the following support from other areas in College:

From the Disability & Dyslexia Services:

  • An initial set number of study skills sessions
  • Available upon request: an orientation buddy during welcome week (another student helping you with the registration activities and familiarisation with College)
  • Initial support and advice on relevant assistive technology
  • Organisation of exams arrangements according to the recommendation contained in the student’s most current medical evidence or DSA Needs Assessment
  • The opportunity to join a social club run by the DDS

Help with applying for Disabled Students Allowance Aspart of their DSA, students may receive regular specialist study skills support, access to specialist equipment.

From other professional services in College:

  • Library support (such as flexibility with loans, help with locating material, etc.).
  • The possibility of requesting priority on the grounds of disability to specific halls of residence in your first year and permission to stay in halls in the second and third years (this is subject to a separate application)
  • Available upon request from the Disability & Dyslexia Services: a pre-arrival visit to College accommodation in order to determine the student’s accommodation and support needs.
  • Available upon request, the possibility of participating in a two-day residential orientation programme called Unistart in early September before the start of their first years
