End Station B Crane Inspection Checklist

The End Station B Crane Inspection Checklist describes special notes and required inspections for the 15 / 50 ton overhead bridge crane. This inspection checklist must be followed by all operators of the crane every shift. Additionally, the crane operator must complete the End Station B Crane Log (02-03-16).

Special Area Notes:

  1. Crane control key may be obtained from the NLCTA Operator. The NLCTA Operators are responsible for the programs in this area.
  2. Use of the End Station B Crane Log to describe each crane use is required.
  3. If you are not familiar with the programs in this building – request a briefing from the NLCTA Operator.
  4. Be especially aware of the SLED Delay Lines and Klystrons. Touching these items with the hook or a suspended load will damage the experimental apparatus.
  5. Know that there is limited hook clearance at the West end of the building where the crane is parked.
  6. If anything unusual occurs, if the crane needs attention, if there are any errors or failures in the use of the crane, if there are any injuries or damage to any property –secure the load, stop work, note problem in log, and inform the NLCTA Operator immediately.

Special Crane Notes:

  1. When raising the hook, there must be ABSOLUTELY NO SWING of the hook or the load. The cable for the 15 ton was damaged and replaced in 2003 by swinging of the load while raising the hook.

Pre-work inspections – Power off:

  1. Verify that the Inspection Test Sticker (located on the side of the radio-remote crane controller) is still valid.
  2. Know where the crane power circuit breaker shut-off is.
  3. Check paddles on the controller. Verify that they move freely and return to the center location automatically.
  4. Each lift must be conducted according to an approvedProcedure. This procedure must be approved by a member of the Hoisting and Rigging panel.
  5. All rigging must be inspected prior to use. Additionally, all lifting devices or fixtures (except eyebolts, shackles, fiber slings, and turnbuckles) must have a valid (dated) inspection sticker.
  6. Know your load’s weight and the safe working limit of the rigging.
  7. Lifting loads of unknown weight is absolutely not allowed. If the weight is not properly posted, the operator must determine the load weight through other means.

Pre-work inspections – Power on:

  1. Check the upper limit switch of the hook you are using. Watch the hook as you raise it to verify that the limit works.
  2. Move crane to the N, S, E, and W and verify that the controls and brakes work.

Working:

  1. On every lift:
  2. Raise load a minimum distance.
  3. Stop lift and observe that brake does not slip.
  4. Check rigging.
  5. Hard Hats:
  • Hard hatsare always required for the operator, assistant, and all persons under the trolley and in the load area. The operator (who is responsible for safe operation of the lift) may additionally require hard hats to be worn by anyone in the End Station if required in his judgment.
  • It is the crane operator’s responsibility to inform others of this Hard Hat Rule. No crane operation is allowed unless all affected personnel are properly protected.

Post-Work:

  1. Park crane toward West end of building.
  2. Note anything unusual in the Crane Logbook.
  3. Plug remote into charger.
  4. Return key to the operator. Inform the operator or any problems.
  5. If the operator is not available, leave the crane hook on the NLCTA Operations Logbook near the main computer console.
  6. If there are any problems with the crane,
  • Note any problems in the Operations Logbook.
  • Inform a NLCTA Operator
  • Apply a tag to the crane with your “OUT OF SERVICE”, your name, and the time and date.
