Nine Week Middle School Keyboarding
Course Description Unit Plan
Course Description: This course will provide an opportunity for students to master the skill of entering alphabetic, numeric, and symbolic information on a keyboard and a ten-key pad using the touch method of key stroking. Emphasis is placed on development of accuracy and speed, proper techniques, and correct fingering.
OBJECTIVE: Given the necessary hardware, software, supplies, and facilities, the student will be able to successfully complete all of the following standards in a course that grants one-half unit of credit. NOTE: Student must be able 20-25 wpm in 6th grade, and 30 in 7th grade and 8th grade)
Unit One: Learning the Basic keyboard (4 1/2 weeks). After completing the lessons in this unit, the students should be able to:
1. Type using the key touch typing method proficiently
2. Demonstrate a typing speed of 20-25 words per minute
3. Demonstrate the usage of correct typing techniques
4. Demonstrate good listening skills
5. Demonstrate and understanding of keyboarding terms

- Class room, school and district rules and procedures
- Learn computer safety and procedures
- Learn proper login procedures, saving and storing classwork
- Learn internet rules and ethics
- Learn computer parts (hardware, software)
- Learn the eight (8) home row keys (asdfjkl;) and the proper keying techniques to be used
- Learn the rest of the letter keys
- Learn punctuation marks and some important symbols
- Work on listening skills and keyboarding vocabulary.

B. Unit Two: Composing from the keyboard (3 1/2 weeks)
B. 2-1.6 Objectives: Upon the completion of this unit, the students should be able:
1. Demonstrate a typing speed of 25-30 wpm.
2. Demonstrate an ability to correct typing errors and be able to recognize proofreader’s marks
3. To compose portfolio pieces at the keyboard. Demonstrate good listening skills
5. Demonstrate the usage of basic word-processing skills (spell-check, cut and paste, fonts, bold, underline, italic).
6. Demonstrate and understanding of keyboarding and word-processing terms.

C. Unit Three- Learning to surf on the internet (1 week)
C.3.1-4 Unit 3 Objectives: Upon the completion of this unit, the students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an ability to successfully maneuver on the world-wide-web
2. Demonstrate a typing speed of 25-30 words per minute
3. keep up with all of the new technology
4. Compose at the computer at a proficient level

2. Students need to bring in articles or information on the latest technology
3. Finding a particular article on the internet and then composing a summary of it on the computer
