1.0 About APT

1.1 How we started...

In 1984 APT Action on Poverty was established by three engineers in the back of one of their garages.They had seen for themselves the ingenuity and hard work of people overseas, and they were inspired to provide a little extra help - technical expertise and designs of tools and equipment for small enterprises, like clamps and metal sheet rollers.

APT has trained people in over 30 different countries during our 30 years. We soon evolved to support more holistic long-term projects which are currently in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka.

We have built and developed partnerships in specific countries where we already have field experience and expertise. The development of partners has been a defining element of our work, which ensures greater and longer term sustainability of the impact on the communities we seek to help.

We widen and deepen our impact by tackling the root causes of poverty. Throughout, we continued to provide practical help, building self-reliance through focusing on helping the most vulnerable people obtain a livelihood.

Alongside this, acknowledgement of work by major institutional donors grew. Some- like Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund have asked APT to show our work to others and best practice sharing and developing partnerships is now key to what we do. We are still small in the UK – this remains our aim – but our work overseas has expanded; and our long partnerships in a number of countries have enabled us to reach many more beneficiaries.

1.2 Who we help

We target our help to the most vulnerable people in the Africa and Asia including young people and children, women, disabled people, workers, people affected by conflict, HIV/AIDS or people in fragile environments.

Our projects include sector-based projects (such as in camel milk or soapstone sectors) which tackle weaknesses in a market system; and more people centred projects (such as disabled people or those affected by HIV and AIDS) which address the needs of a marginalised group. The latter aim not only to access basic needs through livelihoods, but to build status, confidence to demand rights, reduce discrimination and change attitudes more widely.

Young people and children

Whilst parents are poor, particularly during conflict, children and young people miss their education. Yet to establish stable, productive communities, they are the future.

Women

The poorest women are often dependent and vulnerable to many forms of abuse – and women are estimated to be 70% of the world’s poorest people.

Disabled People

Disabled people face attitudinal, institutional and environmental barriers that impede their access to livelihoods, education, health and legal services as well as their participation in community activities. Sometimes they are even hidden away in shame.At least 10% of people are disabled in developing countries, and the majority 70%) are extremely poor.

Workers

Some workers face danger to their health and safety, as well as being paid a pittance for their work. Others- like girls and youngwomen doing domesticwork –have no-one to protect them from abuse.

HIV/AIDS

People affected by HIV/AIDS face both stigma and health challenges in all areas of their life; but they can ‘live positively’.

People living in post-conflict zones

Terrible conflicts leave lasting impact – on local economies, infrastructure and on the victims of war. But countries can rebuild.

People who have suffered from environmental or natural disasters

When emergency aid is finished and gone, there is an urgent need to rebuild livelihoods for their long-term survival and independence.

2. Key responsibilities of the APT Public Fundraising Manager

2.1 Overview

The role of the Public Fundraising Manager is to co-ordinate, raise and grow funds through individual income streams to meet organisational targets and matched funding requirements, and build awareness of APT Action on Poverty’s work, in line with the charity’s mission and aims.

2.2 Responsibilities:

i)  Development and delivery of the fundraising strategy for individual donor income streams:

Grow the level of regular (and occasional) giving to APT Action on Poverty, through for example, the number of standing orders, high net worth donors and corporate engagements.

You will be required to identify key individual donor groups and design specific donor journeys that encourage retention; build loyalty, satisfaction and trust; generate further involvement and ultimately move donors up the fundraising pyramid, maximising their giving potential and life-time value. This will include:

·  Personal contact with existing and prospective donors, sharing stories about our work to build supporter relationships and commitment to giving to APT Action on Poverty.

·  Manage targeted events for increased fundraising and engagement

·  Stimulate, identify and support third party fundraising events, including challenges.

·  Develop donor networks, establishing links with others who have the potential to engage others

·  Develop a high net worth donor stewardship plan, build relationships, engagement and income streams. e.g. through partner tours, donor visits and events.

·  Promote legacy and in memoriam giving

·  Maximise individual tax-effective giving.

ii)  Develop and implement communications for this strategy

·  Work with the CEO and colleagues to devise and implement an annual communications and appeals calendar for individual donors

·  Prepare all communications, campaign promotion and support materials for individual donors. This will include developing themes of support and the ‘ask’, and sharing information on topics of interest to build relationships, through newsletters, verbal reports etc.

·  Maximise the use of our database (e-tapestry), website, social media, emails.

·  Maintain and update the database and work with colleagues to ensure records are maintained in the database, and conforming to the data protection act.

iii)  Develop Profile and Awareness

Including, in addition to communications above:

·  Contribute to the guardianship and development of the APT Action on Poverty brand.

·  Secure media coverage through proactive promotion of the APT’s work through press releases and other media activity, including social media.

·  Build support for the cause through targeted profile raising e.g. in local community, amongst corporates, targeted HNWIs.

iv)  General

·  Keep abreast of the interests, trends, and practises in the funding environment, exploring new approaches and adapting the strategy as appropriate.

·  Monitoring and tracking progress of fundraising strategies, providing analysis of the levels of success; including keeping up to date records using eTapestry, analysing and evaluating activities in order to inform future plans.

·  Work together with the Fundraising Manager (Trusts and Institutions) to meet project and organisational fundraising targets.

·  Contribute to the work of other APT colleagues in communications and relationship building, including the timely provision of information.

·  Represent APT at meetings, events and other networks as appropriate.

·  Contribute to the strategic planning of the organisation.

·  Undertake any appropriate duties that may be requested by the CEO.

2.4 Reporting structure

Reporting to:

The person in this position will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

Line management:

Responsibility for the day to day supervision and guidance of fundraising volunteers.

Management of Resources:

With the CEO propose annual expenditure figures for individual donor development growth plans.

3.0 Person Specification

Experience:

As an experienced fundraiser you will have a proven track record in achieving financial targets, planning and evaluating campaigns, including:

·  At least 5 years’ experience and a proven track record of managing the growth of individual income streams.

·  Specific experience of: building and upgrading donor relationships including HNW donors, event management and corporate engagement.

·  Leading on and carrying out funding prospect research and developing new donor relationships.

·  Database management experience

Knowledge:

·  Good understanding of charity and direct marketing legislation, the Data Protection Act and Institution of Fundraising Guidelines

·  Able to demonstrate understanding of the challenges of vulnerable and marginalised people living in developing countries and the potential of sustainable livelihoods

Skills:

·  Excellent personal skills with a proven ability to engage, inspire and support people to undertake fundraising activities.

·  Excellent ability to write a range of materials suitable for different audiences and present it in an engaging and appropriate form

·  Excellent research and analytical skills

·  Good time management skills, able to work under pressure and meet deadlines

·  Ability to build lasting and positive relationships with individual donors

·  Good listening and oral communication skills

·  Good IT skills including Word, Publisher, Social Media Channels, Word Press and donor management packages, ideally eTapestry.

Personal Attributes:

Your strategic approach to individual giving will be analytical and reflective. At the same time you will be passionate about Action on Poverty’s work, understand motivations behind why individuals give and be able to communicate a compelling case for support.

As a team-player, you are skilled at building and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Open to new ideas, you take a proactive, innovative and creative approach to your work.

You will also be able to:

4.0 Terms and Conditions

Salary: £30,000-£35,000 dependent upon experience (pro rata for 3 days per week).

Hours: Equivalent to 3 days per week, based on a 40 hour week. Core hours Monday to Friday are expected but flexi-time is in operation whereby staff can start earlier or later in agreement with his/her line manager and work corresponding hours. The Public Fundraising Manager must be prepared to work evenings and weekends.

Overtime/evening or weekend working:

A rest day is offered to staff after an assignment outside Europe exceeding 7 days in duration; TOIL (Time Off in Lieu) is given for days worked outside normal working hours. No overtime is payable.

Location: Pershore, Worcestershire WR10 3NE; with occasional travel within the UK. Trips to field programmes in Africa may occasionally be required.

Pension: Pension provision (up to 6% employer’s contribution subject to employee contributions) will be available after completion of the probationary period.

Holidays: The holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December. The entitlement is pro rata 25 days plus Bank Holidays (15 days plus 60% of Bank Holidays).

Probation & Notice Periods:

The appointment will be based on a six-month probationary period when the notice will be four weeks. Once confirmed in post the notice period will be three months.
