Background Information

Background

Niagara Region Support for Syrian Refugees Fund was created through the visionary leadership of the Niagara Regional Chair Alan Caslin in response to the crisis of the Syrian Refugees. The Regional Chair proposed a motion to the Regional Council of Niagara that would match funds raised in the region for up to $25,000. The funds raised and matched will be used to pay for rent, food, clothing and other expenses for one year. Mennonite Central Committee was selected as the local organization that will manage the funds. Through MCC $25,000 was raised plus another $2,741 through a concert.

Purpose

The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial support for resettlement of Syrian refugees throughout the Niagara Region.

Oversight

The Fund will be managed by Mennonite Central Committee Ontario. Expenditures from the fund will be supervised by MCCO’s Refugee Program Coordinator in cooperation with the Niagara Region Support for Syrian Refugees Fund Management Committee.

Fund Criteria

Groups wanting to access the fund must complete the attached application form and meet the criteria below:

  • A willingness to work collaboratively in the sponsoring and settling of refugees from Syria.
  • A plan in place for raising the remaining funds required for sponsorship.
  • A commitment to ensure refugee protection.

Fund Procedures

  • Sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with group once it has been approved. The MOU will address both the financial commitment of the group as well as the provision of settlement and integration support.
  • Since the fund is for blended visa office referred refugees, before the arrival of a refugee, MCC will flow the first month’s committed funding to the approved sponsoring group. After the 7thmonth of sponsorship, MCC will flow the remaining approved funding.

Reporting requirements

  • Groups will complete the three MCCO Check-ins. One is on the first month of arrival for our baseline, second in the six month and the final at the end of the twelfth month.
  • At the end of the sponsorship the Refugee Coordinator and members of the management committee will conduct a sponsorship evaluation with the sponsors.
