Skills Update Sessions for People Handling Staff

NB These sessions should not be seen as generic refresher or update training, rather they are designed to address specific individuals learning needs. Please read the section below as to who should attend

Nominations

Nominations are to be made tomoving& or by letter to Moving and Handling AdministrationWest Glasgow ACH, 5th Floor Ward 5A.. Dalnair Street G3 8SJ

Acceptance onto a course will be confirmed to the nominating person, who will be responsible for ensuring relevant details of the course are communicated to the delegate. If the course is full and the nomination unable to be accepted, the nominating person will be informed.

When making a nomination please use the enclosed form and provide:

  • the delegates name, job title, Payroll Number, place of work e.g. hospital and ward/department;
  • the date and venue of the course(s) being nominated for and;
  • your own name and telephone number.

Skills Update Sessions

The moving and handling modular courses have been discontinued and have been replaced with the assessment approach described here. Skills Update Sessions of two hours (for staff working predominantly with patients on a bed / trolley, for example ITU and Theatre staff) and three hours (for staff working on wards) are provided, access to these courses is only for:

  • A member of staff returning to work after a long term absence who needs to refresh their skills
  • A member of staff who is struggling to stay at work due to a musculoskeletal disorder which they perceive is being made worse by how they are currently undertaking their work activities
  • During a staff members KSF review, or as a result of undertaking self assessment, that staff members practice is identified as having some skills gaps
  • During the competency assessment in the ward, the skills update sessions are identified by the MHP as the most appropriate method of input

The skills update sessions are open programmed to enable delegates to set the content depending on their previously identified needs. Therefore, all delegates attending the sessions should have discussed with their local manager the expected learning outcomes, self assessment forms are available here to assist with this.

Records

Attendance will be recorded on Empower by the M&H Team. In addition, each Local Manager has a duty to keep a record of who has attended training. To assist with this, if a delegate does not attend, the nominating person will be contacted that day to inform them of the non-attendance. For our own records we will request a reason for non-attendance if known.

Morning sessions start at 9.00am;Afternoon sessions start at 1.00pm
