NHS Lanarkshire has taken a new approach to recruiting Band 2 Healthcare Assistants within the Acute Division/Hospitals.

We no longer advertise individual posts/vacancies, all Band 2 Healthcare Assistant vacancies shall be advertised, shortlisted and interviewed collectively.

Positions can be within any area of the acute hospital including Medical for example Renal, Surgical including Theatres, Cancer and Outpatients and Older People’s Services including associated sites.

As part of a multidisciplinary team you will carry out routine personal care / assist with routine examination duties for patients, in support of (and supervised by) a registered nurse / clinician. You will ensure a person centred approach to care delivery which is safe and effective to ensure and maintain quality strategy.

You will possess SVQ II in healthcare or be working towards this or have equivalent experience working in a caring environment / role. The ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team is essential.

Previous experience as a support worker within an acute environment is desirable.

Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a secondment. The employee MUST already have had agreement from their line manager to be released on a secondment before applying for the post. 4.  SCOPE AND RANGE

To provide a high quality, safe and supportive environment in order to care for patients within the clinicqal area , meeting identified physical, emotional and psycho-social needs of patients and carers.

Promoting self care, enabling people with long term conditions to live as independently as possible in their communities by ensuring that appropriate services and support are available to the patient and their carers.

5.  MAIN DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
·  Carry out assigned tasks in delivering and supporting direct patient care under the direction of a registered nurse to ensure delivery of high quality patient care, which may include
-  Assist in the preparation of patients for procedures.
-  Assist with admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
-  Assist in the collection of routine urine/blood specimens.
-  Monitor and order supplies and carry out required housekeeping duties, in order to support patient care.
-  Provide escort duties as required.
-  Undertake recording of patient vital signs and report results to registered staff.
-  Assist in maintenance and improvement of patient mobility in conjunction and in support of other members of the multidisciplinary team to continue rehabilitation.
-  Report observed changes in the patients physical and psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up to date records, to ensure effective communication.
-  Carry out pre-use checks on some equipment, as specified in relevant protocols e.g. blood glucose monitoring equipment.
-  Prepare equipment and procedure trolleys as per procedure manuals, etc…
·  Co-operate with and maintain good relationships with other disciplines that are attending and treating patients to maximise patient care.
·  Maintain good relationships and an empathic approach to clients’ carers and relatives and refer them to a registered nurse for any questions they may have on the patients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise.
·  Report observed changes in the patients’ physical/psychological needs and participate in maintaining accurate and up-to-date records to ensure effective communication.
·  Work within Divisional policies and procedures to ensure maintenance of safe working practices for patients and colleagues.
·  Adhere to ward and unit procedures for the use of supplies and equipment in order to promote the effective and efficient use of resources.
·  Maintain stock levels of all supplies and carry out housekeeping duties, to support the smooth running of the ward unit area.
·  Participate in personal development plans to maintain skills and develop personal growth through training and education.
·  Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
·  Be familiar with equipment relevant to the specialty to which you are deployed and assist in the maintenance, cleaning and storage of this equipment.
·  Be aware of personal limitations.
·  Provide an advocacy role to ensure that patients’ are at the centre of all care delivery.
·  Regularly handles patient belongings and valuables.
