NQT Quick Reference Guide

  • Legal requirement to have an Induction Tutor.
  • NQTs can have a separate mentor or they can be the same person. But be aware of clear distinction of the role and responsibilities of each
  • Regular Meetings- 1 every 2 weeks which should be documented.
  • Assessment Reports- 1 per term. You should be part of this process. This should be documented
  • Reduced Timetable- 80%. (10% NQT and 10% PPA time.) The NQT time should be directed time and you should have a programme of support which is documented.
  • If over 29.5 days of absence then you will have to have an extension
  • Observations- you should expect 1 per half term (there may be more). Observations should have a clear focus and also link to your development.
  • Development plan- you should be part of establishing your targets. These should be reviewed half termly and either continued or new targets set.
  • If you are struggling, your school may issue on Action Plan, this indicates that you need some additional support but this should be no more than what is required to be satisfactory against the standards.

  • Make a recommendation to the Appropriate Body on whether your performance against standards is satisfactory
  • Ensure you have a 80% teaching timetable
  • Retain all documents and evidence on file for 6 years
  • Must inform Governing body of your progress

  • Arranging and conducting half-termly review you
  • Undertake 3 formal assessment meetings ( 1 per term) which generates assessment forms.
  • Inform you of judgements- no surprises.
  • Ensure your teaching is observed (1st observation must be within first 4 wks)
  • Take prompt action if you are having difficulties.
  • organise and implement an individual programme of professional development, with clear objectives;
  • ensuring that appropriate support, monitoring and assessment takes place at appropriate times during the induction year;
  • maintain a written record of all support, monitoring and assessment that takes place in relation to your induction
  • Arrange for you to watch others in their own school and other schools.

  • Ensure that both the Headteacher and induction Tutor support your induction
  • If you experience difficulties- provide support and guidance as necessary to both school and you personally
  • Make final decision based on recommendations – has the NQTs performance against the standards to a satisfactory level?
  • Notify National College of NQTs who have started, completed (satisfactorily or not), require an extension or have left the school part way through the induction period
