NFHS Uniform and Equipment Rules Changes
Effective 2009-10 unless specified otherwise.

Baseball / Beginning in 2012 all bats must meet a new performance standard called Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution (BBCOR) to be legal. Bats must be labeled with a rectangular certification mark on the barrel of the bat in a contrasting color and a minimum of ½” on each side. This will be consistent with new NCAA rules that go into effect in 2011. The new standard ensures that non-wood bats will be more comparable to those of wood bats. Also, beginning in 2012 the Mattingly bat, DeMarini Vendetta and Reebok Vector O will be illegal.
Basketball / Beginning in 2007-08, the light colored jerseys must be white.
Football / 1) Effective in 2012, visiting jerseys must be white, with limitations on the design. Home jerseys must be dark and there are limitations on the amount of white. Be sure to consult the Football Rule Book for specifics or MSHSL Website Football Activity Page.
Gymnastics / Board Safety Mat – A manufactured mat that goes around the front and side of a vaulting board is required for all round off-entry vaults and round off-entry mounts on the balance beam. It is the responsibility of each team to provide the safety mat for its own gymnasts.
Ice Hockey / Beginning in 2008-2009, goalkeepers will be required to wear a flapper-style throat protector. The protectors must be separate, commercially manufactured, unaltered and properly attached to the helmet or face mask. Reminder: Rule change for 2007-2008, goalkeepers blocker glove and catching glove may not exceed 9 inches width and 17 inches length.
Soccer / 1) Beginning in 2008, shin guards must meet NOSCAE standard. 2) Molded facemask permitted to protect facial injury.
Softball / 1) Players are now permitted to wear metal cleats and metal toe plates.
2) Effective January 1, 2010 the dynamic stiffness of a softball shall not exceed 7,500 lbs/inch which tested under current proposal ASTM test methods.
Volleyball / 1) Placement of number on center front of uniform must be located no more than 5 inches below the bottom edge of the neckline, ribbing, placket or seam. 2) Libero player’s uniform number must not be a duplicate of a teammate.
Wrestling / Reminder: Rule change for 2007-08, wrestlers with braces or a special orthodontic device must wear a tooth and mouth protector to cover the device(s).
