Goes 184.124 MPH and Sets New H/PS Record on Infinity ECU!
Team Specifically Attributes Infinity ECU’s Data Logging to Critical Changes Needed to set Record
HAWTHORNE CA—The MotoIQ.com/5523 Motorsports/Specialty Cars 240SX Land Speed Project set a new record in the H/PS Class (1.0-1.5L, production body, factory based engine and induction method) at the USFRA World of Speed at the Bonneville Salt Flats with a two –way average of 184.124 MPH!
At Bonneville, cars must qualify for a record first by improving upon it, and then by backing up a new record with a pass the following day. The cars are impounded after the first successful run and then lined up the following day to back up the initial record setting run. The record is set by a two-way average of the first record pass and the second pass that backs it up, which is why even though the car made a top speed pass of 190.757 MPH, this run is averaged with the 177.492 MPH pass from the first day, culminating in a two-way average of 184.124 MPH for the record books.
This accomplishment wasn’t achieved without effort, as the 240’s production body is not allowed any aero modifications, and high winds combined with the inherent lack of traction on the salt made proper set up critical to success.
Driver Chuck Johnson stated, “With the recent rain at Bonneville, the condition of the salt was the most challenging I’ve raced on thus far. From the salt’s lack of traction and numerous imperfections to strong gusts of wind, I found myself battling to keep Project 240SX LSR pointed straight and on course throughout each record attempt. The AEM Infinity EMS played a vital role in setting a new land speed record as its data logging capabilities allowed me to concentrate on driving knowing that every detail of the pass was being recorded. This gave us the ability to examine the data after the fact and easily implement changes, which directly translated into a faster, yet more manageable car to drive at high speeds. The power of the Infinity EMS is best quantified by the difference of our initial qualifying pass of 177.492 MPH and our final record pass of 190.757 MPH.”
5523 Motorsports’ Nick Hunter, responsible for the engine build, wiring and tuning, commented, “What we really love about the Infinity is its ease of use! Once you have your layouts setup, reviewing data on the fly is very straightforward and allows you to spend more time tuning and less time fumbling with software trying to see what is going on. Traction control, anti-lag, closed loop boost control, drive by wire throttle control, and closed loop lambda control....it’s all on board. I don't have multiple add-on components to deal with, it's all contained andall very easy to implement. When we go to the track, it's all at our fingertips and we don't have multiple systems to look after. The physical hardware is very robust and weather proof (super important when you're playing in the salt all day!) and we simply don't have to spend time worrying about it. It works right every time!”
The team made many mechanical and electrical changes this season in an effort to better their record setting performance from last season, including the addition of an AEM Infinity-8 ECU, AQ-1 Data Logger, 4-Channel Wideband UEGO Controller, Smart Coils, 4-Channel EGT Amplifier and practically every conceivable sensor the company offers. In addition to being able to extract every bit of reliable performance from the engine using the Infinity and associated AEM electronics, they directly attributed the Infinity’s data logging capabilities with providing them the critical data necessary to make the mechanical changes that led to their record-setting performance.
