Hong Kong has potential to develop Chinese medicine industry
On today’s Task Force on Economic Challenges meeting, Chief Executive Donald Tsang discussed the potential of developing medical service industry. The meeting discussed barriers of developing the high quality industry of medical service from in respect to resource, and the legal and institutional aspects. The Chinese medicine departments of several Hong Kong universities showed support and believe that Hong Kong has the potential develop Chinese medicine industry. For example, establishment of Chinese medicine of Hong Kong brand and establish quality assurance centre will bring economic benefits to Hong Kong.
Dean Liang Liu of the School of Chinese Medicine of the Hong Kong Baptist University pointed out yesterday that Hong Kong had already been developing Chinese medicine industry for many years. Although its history is not long, but its regulation, policy, schools, departments such as education and research facilities has been of considerable size, and will bring professionals in Chinese medicine to a higher level. Therefore Chinese medicine industry has great development potential in Hong Kong.
Liu further expressed that many Chinese medicine enterprises are already developed to a mature level in Hong Kong. Their quality management level meets international recognition with steady growing sales. They will provide a good foundation to create more Hong Kong brand Chinese medicine. In addition, Hong Kong could complement the mainland, for example, many mainland tourists come to Hong Kong will buy Chinese medicine products at medicine stores, giving a show of confidence for Hong Kong medicine products. In the long-term, more Hong Kong Chinese medicine products will be sold in the mainland and even in the international market to stimulate Hong Kong’s economy.
