Association des Assistant(e)s dentaires du Québec

LBPSB Partnership with Cree Oral Health Services in James Bay Communities

By Tammy Thomson

Dental assistants in the nine Cree communities around James Bay will have training provided to them starting in 2017- it’s taken over a year in planning and coordinating but the project is slated to go forward in January. The project began through an almost-chance encounter at the big dental convention which takes place in Montreal annually- the Journées Dentaires Internationales du Québec (JDIQ). Louise, a dentist from the Cree Board approached the Quebec dental assistant’s association (AADQ) to ask about dental assistant training, as luck would have it, I was there to greet her. I am a teacher and curriculum leader for LBPSB’s dental assistance program and am also on the Executive Committee of the Quebec Dental Assistant’s Association (AADQ) so I was at the booth that day- from humble beginnings, great things are built.

DA Helen in Chisasibi

I went north (about 1400 km north!) for the first time in November 2015; my director, Paula Pedroso, let me use a week of presence time and the Cree Board of Health and Social Services James Bay (CBHSSJB) paid for my travel and lodging and off I went. I visited the two largest Cree communities: Mistissini (pop. 3427) and Chisasibi (pop. 4484) where I toured the dental clinics and met some of the dental assistants and dentists who work there. I went back for a week in March 2016 for a more comprehensive visit and had a whirlwind tour of Chisasibi, Wemindji, Waskaganish and Waswanipi where I saw more dental clinics and met more DAs.

I gathered information on which types of treatments were performed, what resources were available and got an overall picture of dentistry in Eeyou Istchee, as the area is called by the Cree. I immediately felt right at home in the clinics; everything looked just like at home and the staff were very welcoming. Many of the clinics are new or newly renovated and some of the DAs have lots of chairside experience. Some, like Helen, participated in a pilot training program given by LBPSB teachers in 2005.

Personal highlights of my trip were looking out the window while eating lunch at the lodge in Waskaganish and seeing people dog-sledding on James Bay and having some workers in the lunch room in Waswanipi share their lunch with me, regale me with hunting stories and teach me how to write and say my name in Cree.

Proposed training models were considered and the one which will be implemented in January provides for an alternating work and half training model provided simultaneously in multiple communities with DA teacher/trainers travelling from community to community. I am unfortunately unable to participate in this model because I cannot be away from home and work for such extended periods but I intend to follow the program with interest and wish the DAs in Eeyou Istchee best of luck in their training.
