Fish Tales
News and reports from Broad Oak Trout Lakes November 2017
News
The Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraiser at the beginning of October raised a total of £365!!! Thank you to those who came. Sadly it was much less busy than last year, but those who contributed were very generous. There was a lot of cake left, so Charlotte took it to work and raised another £26 – a captive Team Meeting audience!!
Fishing remains good. The water is lovely and fresh and as the weather has been so ‘unseasonal’, with very few inclement days for the time of year, there have been few excuses for not casting a fly.
We were featured in issue 502 (11 Oct-7 Nov) of Trout Fisherman magazine. Thank you to TF. It has brought a few fresh faces to the fishery, which is good news! We also have a couple of small groups coming in the next few weeks – why not think about Broad Oak for a work team-building day?
The Goldies are still swimming about, one in each lake. The pot is building – slowly. It seems many are not interested unless the pot is a sizable sum – well it won’t be if you don’t put your £1 in!!
Fly of the month – September and October
September saw continuation of the reign of the Damsel matched with the Daddy-long-legs. Buzzers also featured well in the trout diet.
October flies were damsels yet again, with a good number of rainbows tempted by a montanta, but the Daddy is still a favourite. We think that the continued warm temperatures are keeping them hatching, so they are still working!
Biggest Catch for September
Apologies to those waiting too long to see their names immortalised in Fish Tales!
Top spot for biggest single fish out of the lakes for September is a triple tie!!
3½lb-ers were each caught by Gerry Donohoe, Bob East and Roger Pope. Well done chaps. Flies were varied too; Klink-hammer, Sedge and Damsel respectively. Fabulous! There were a good number of 3lb-ers too – too many to list.
A good batch of fish.
Biggest Catch for October
Thank you to Dave Kelly for this fabulous picture of his 3lb14oz rainbow hooked on a Daddy Log-legs in the middle of October! A top fish, taking October’s accolade.
Runner up was M Wardle with a 3 ¾ lb beauty taken on a pheasant tail nymph, and then member Andy Cullen tempting a 3lb 9oz rainbow from the bottom lake (Acorn) and a secret fly! Come now, Andy, don’t be coy! We want to know what it was!
Weather Forecast (taken from Met Office website)
We seem set to have a bit of rain early in the month, but mainly in the north. The pattern seems to be getting colder but more settled and mainly dry over the next few weeks. Great fly fishing weather, perhaps buzzer time on a sunny afternoon?
Christmas Turkeys!
One of our regulars, Richard Smith, a local farmer, has a batch of Bronze Turkeys growing in time for Christmas. £3.80 per lb, dressed weight. They will be 12-20lb weight, with most being in the 14-16lb range.
Collection would be on Saturday 23rd December from Broad Oak. To order, pop in, phone or email Chris or Charlotte who will take your details and deposit (£5) and pass on to Richard.
Why not combine your Turkey collection with a festive fish on that day? Free bacon roll for those fishing and collecting a turkey!!
If you have any news, view or comments you would like included in Fish Tales then just let Charlotte know.
See you soon. Tight Lines
