Examine these passages in the Gospel of John. What do you think the role of “signs” might be in the Gospel? Describe the tension between belief and unbelief related to signs.

John 2:11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

John 2:18 The Jews then said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?"

John 2:23 When he was in Jerusalem during the Passover festival, many believed in his name because they saw the signs that he was doing. 2:24 But Jesus on his part would not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 2:25 and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone.

John 3:2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God."

John 4:48 Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe."

John 4:54 Now this was the second sign that Jesus did after coming from Judea to Galilee.

John 6:2 A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick.

John 6:14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, "This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world."

John 6:26 Jesus answered them, "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

John 6:30 So they said to him, "What sign are you going to give us then, so that we may see it and believe you? What work are you performing?

John 7:31 Yet many in the crowd believed in him and were saying, "When the Messiah comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?"

John 9:16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not observe the sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such signs?" And they were divided.

John 10:41 Many came to him, and they were saying, "John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true."

John 11:47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council, and said, "What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.

John 12:17 So the crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to testify. 12:18 It was also because they heard that he had performed this sign that the crowd went to meet him. 12:19 The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see, you can do nothing. Look, the world has gone after him!"

John 12:37 Although he had performed so many signs in their presence, they did not believe in him.

John 20:30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book.
