NEW MEXICO STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

(1950-2010)

Schools have claimed to be champions as far back as statehood (1912), first through comparative scores, then by a formula based on record, strength of competition, etc. The Gateway Bowl supposedly matched the two strongest teams in the late 1930s. Later sportswriters and coaches’ polls pointed to the best team. But no official championship was organized until 1950 when a new system came into being. The playoffs began in 1953 and have determined the state champions eversince.

The initial classes were defined as “AA, A, B and C”. Even though the state kept those same classes, it relabeled them in 1970 as “AAAA, AAA, AA and A”. A fifth classification was added in 2000 and the largest schools became “AAAAA”.

DISTRICT CHAMPIONS -- 1953 TO 2010

In 2000 a new, fifth classification was created for the largest schools in the state. For the previous 30 years the system had remained the same with the largest schools being in AAAA (informally known as “Quad-A”). That included schools with enrollment of 1201 or larger. The next class was AAA (or “Triple A”). It contained schools with 401-1200 students. Class AA was 151-400 and the smallest class, Class A, was schools of 150 or less.

The idea of leagues in New Mexico can be traced back to at least the early 1940s when the Rio Grande Conference was formed. It included the schools of Espanola, El Rito, St. Catherine’s, McCurdy Mission, Taos and Santa FeIndianSchool. The IndianSchool and Espanola finished with identical records of 4-0-1 and played each other again for the championship. Espanola won the championship game and with it, its first and only league championship to date.

The NMAA officially formed leagues or conferences in 1950. They were properly labeled “A”, “B” and “C”. As the playoffs began in 1953 the larger schools in Class A decided to separate themselves from those smaller ones and called themselves “AA”. Those names stuck until they got the notion that the smaller classifications sounded like something less than varsity teams. The enrollment limits remained the same but in 1970 the names were upgraded to “AAAA”, “AAA”, “AA” and “A”.

Each classification was divided into Districts. Initially (in 1953) the state was evenly proportioned into the Four Corners of the rectangular-shaped state. But in time the Albuquerque area experienced the most growth and new schools sprung up over the decades. In the case of AAA, a fifth district (5AAA) was created thus complicating the 10-team playoff system for that class. The same was the case in AAAA where the larger APS competition wanted a league of their own.

Class A experienced an odd change in population. The northern schools grew into AA while the southern bunch remained very small and still very agricultural. Consequently Class A eventually became two districts, all in the southern part of the state.

The new formula beginning in 2000 put all schools with over 401 students into the “Tier II”. Those larger schools were divided equally into three classes, AAA, AAAA and AAAAA. There were 61 such schools. After some adjustments to keep the Albuquerque schools in the same class, the largest 22 went into 5A. The next 19 went to 4A and the remaining 20 went into 3A. All classes started with four leagues or districts, which makes playoff schedules more uniform. However, that fifth league became necessary again in the Albuquerque area. Those schools with 400 students or less are in “Tier I”. The larger 20 are in AA and the smaller 14 are in Class A. For the first time since 1950 there were no independent, unattached schools playing football in New Mexico in 2000.

The ranks of the 6-man teams swelled to 17 in 2000 after beginning with a humble 10 when the sport was officially endorsed in 1987. In 2002 the 6-man schools numbered 20. However, in 2006 the NMAA created 8-man football which seemed to be just right for those smaller schools. Many schools stepped up from 6-man and stepped down from Class A. In 2010 there were 11 schools in 6-man football and 11 in 8-man football. Class A had 13 teams.

FINAL DISTRICT STANDING (1953-2010)

Leagues (or districts) were officially recognized by the NMAA in 1953 as the state started the playoff system. The original classifications were A, B & C. In the summer of 1953 a group recognized that there was a disparity in Class A. The larger schools were clearly bigger than the smaller ones in that class. So, they requested a last minute change to create “AA” for the largest of those schools. It was approved and four classifications would be part of the football landscape for the next 34 years. In 1987 a 6-man classification was added. In 2000 the new century started off with an additional classification. In 2006 the NMAA added an 8-man variety to the game.

The names of each classification has changed over the years. In 1969 the “AA,A,B,C” nomenclature was eliminated in favor of “AAAA,AAA,AA and A”. Part of that reasoning was some confusion over a “B school” being thought of as a junior varsity.

This record does not include 6-man league standings or the new 8-man. This record has the league record after the school name followed by their overall record including playoff games. Ties were a part of the game until the mid-1990s when overtime tie breakers did away with that stat. A record of “5-3-1” means five wins, three losses and one tie.
