Paul May, Chief of Police

Congratulations to the 2014 graduating class of Cimarron High School. Please be careful this summer. Wear your seat belt and make sure everyone else in the car is wearing theirs also. Stay away from the drugs and alcohol. There is a reason why the drinking age is 21; you can wait a few more years. Because for as much fun as high school was, college will be even better and we all want to hear your college stories when you come home for the holidays.

There are a few special days this month

National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day

May 15th is Law Enforcement Memorial Day. This is the day we stop to remember the Law Enforcement Officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice. On The Mall in Washington DC the names of the 105 who lost their lives in 2013, including New Mexico’s own Sergeant Robert W. Barron of the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office, will be read and added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Flags are flown at Half-Staff on the day.

Run for The Wall

May 17th the Run for the Wall makes its annual visit through Cimarron on their way to become part of Rolling Thunder in Washington DC Memorial Day weekend. Many of these riders are Vietnam War veterans. The Vietnam War officially ended on April 30, 1975. An 18 years old serving in Vietnam at the end of the war would now be 57. Many of these riders have switched from motorcycles to cars as the years add up. Come out and support these riders as they roll through while we can. It will not be that many years before we begin describing how we are losing the Vietnam veterans the same way we speak of the WW II veterans today. Most of these riders fought to protect our abilities to have this type of event. Look for more information as the day gets closer.

Memorial Day

May 27th is Memorial Day. In this time of support for our military and veterans some of the holidays have lost their original meaning. While we are thankful every day for what our veterans have done for us, remember this is the one specific day we set aside to thanks and remember those who we can’t hug or give a hand shake to, because they never came home. Flags are flown at Half-Staff until noon on Memorial Day.

We have had a couple bear and snake sightings already. There are a few things you can do to help us with the problem. When you take your trash to the dumpster, remember to close the door and hook the latch. It sounds easy but some people didn’t do it last year and there will be some who don’t do it this year. If you decide it’s too late in the evening to take out your trash, keep it inside your house away from the doors. Don’t leave the trash on a screened porch or inside your car port. This includes the empty cans for the recycling. If you are feeding animals outside empty the food dishes at night. Keep your vehicles cleaned out. The bears can smell the leftover food inside your car even with the windows rolled up. If you do have bear issues please let us know at the police department. We will again be working closely with Game and Fish through the summer.

Judy LeDoux – Village of Cimarron Mayor

First, I would like to thank all those citizens who have come been coming out to the Council meetings and Public Hearings.

With the entire Village and surrounding ranches gearing up for the summer season May is an especially busy month. Try to take advantage of the annual plant sale at the Elementary/Middle School greenhouse on the 17th but you might want to check to make sure and the Village Clean-Up on the 31st.

April did bring us a little bit of moisture and also some sadness with the leaving of twoVillage employeesand one governing body memberwhom have given a lot of their time working for the good of the Village.

Public Works Department – Mr. Leo Martinez is retiring after working for the Village for 31 years. We will miss him, his knowledge, his work ethic and his smiling face every day.

Municipal Court House – Mr. Ralph Coulter is hanging up his robe as Judge, after serving this community for the past 12 years. As a native of Cimarron we look forward to seeing him and his lovely bride around the Village.

Cimarron Governing Body – Mr. Eddie Carter former Councilor and Mayor Pro-Tem turned in his resignation from the governing body as of April 23rd. He has been a volunteer for the fire department, ambulance service and council member for over 30 years. He and his family are moving to Raton and they will all be missed.

We wish you all good luck and thank you for all your hard work over the years.
