New Librarians’ Orientation: DESTINY 101

  1. Let’s play Guess the DESTINY Stats!
  2. On BLUE post it: Guess how many print/AV Copies in your collection
  3. On GREEN post it: Guess how many items are currently Overdue
  4. On ORANGE post it: Guess how many eBooks in your collection
  5. You will soon discover the answers! Closest to the right number wins a prize!
  6. Destiny desktop icon
  7. On older desktop/laptop computers, may direct to your own Destiny Catalog.
  8. On new devices, likely directs to district Destiny Portal @ , where users must select their school.
  9. Mike Fort, ODL Supervisor, working on a job for Tech Liaisons to redirect Destiny icons on all new devices to specific school’s Destiny catalog.
  10. Universal Search/Destiny Classic views
  11. Defaults to Universal Search- 4 ribbons- Featured collections, eBooks, Interactive eBooks, and Digital Resource Links
  12. Print books in the library’s physical collection will appear on their own ribbon once a search is initiated
  13. Users don’t need to Log In to simply search/browse for print materials in either Universal Search or Classic
  14. Users must login with BCPS username/password to access eBooks on Follett Shelf or create a Favorites list
  15. LMS must log in and exit Universal Search and go to the Classic view to access administration functions (Circulation, Reports, Back Office, etc.)
  16. Log in
  17. Exit Universal Search using the Exit button at the top right of the window to go to Destiny Classic view.
  18. Log in with your BCPS credentials (upper right corner)
  19. Change View All at the top right to Library View
  20. Review tabs and left sidebar. NOTE: Some items will be covered at a later PD.
  21. Getting Help
  22. Click HELP Upper right-corner in Classic view
  23. Use buttons or search by keyword, e.g. patron barcodes (print patron barcodes)
  24. NOTE: Some functions visible in HELP are done at the district level in BCPS, not available to LMS.

  26. Click on Websites tab
  27. Use left sidebar to Narrow search results
  28. Hover on icon for brief details preview, including Grade Levels
  29. Drag and drop a Website to My Personal list from search results OR click Add to This List in brief details preview
  30. Click icon or title to open Website in a new browser tab
  31. We will discuss One Search/Digital Resources at a later PD
  32. Circulation
  33. Check Out > To Patron or By Homeroom
  34. Scan Patron Barcode or type last name > click Find Patron
  35. Listen for Transaction Blocked tone; can over-ride by clicking YES
  36. Do not deny students a book if they have Overdues or have not paid for Lost books.
  37. Scan Book Barcode or type barcode number > click Find Copy
  38. If not found, jot down Title, Book Barcode #, Call #, student’s name
  39. Later, search Catalog (Location: BCPS or Elem Schools) for a Title Record and Add Copy > Type in Book Barcode. Then, Check Out book to student.
  40. Review Renew/Mark Lost
  41. Click Patron Username to view full Patron Record; can print a single Patron Barcode for a newly enrolled student here.
  42. Review OK to Photo, OK to Publish, AUP on File; only accurate if school office has updated this info in STARS.
  43. Uncheck Only My Patrons to access the Patron Record of student who has books/fines from your school but has moved to another school, e.g. to clear obligations/fines; the LMS at the new school cannot clear obligations from your school)
  44. Check In > Scan Book Barcode. Record In-Library Use to have books used in the Library, but not checked out to a patron, included in circulation statistics.
  45. Run Overdue List or Notices (List for your reference, Notices for distribution to students)
    *Good idea to have Overdue List ready for each class. Ask students in a friendly manner to look for overdue books. Consider distributing Overdue Notices to Classroom Teacher to send home in take home folders to ensure they go home, especially for Primary students.
  46. Reports tab > Patron Reports on left sidebar
  47. Page 1 Format:
  48. Show Checked Out/Overdue Materials > All that are currently Overdue
  49. Uncheck Resources Assigned to Custodian/Unpaid Resource Fines
  50. For Overdue List: Report Output PDF. For Notices: in English *Can run notices for individual students whose parents speak only Spanish/French
  51. Click CONTINUE.

  53. My Patrons: Can Update Patron types if you don’t want to include Faculty, Staff, etc.
  54. Check ALL student Patron types (including Summer)
  55. Can include your patrons at other sites that have your materials/owe fines for Report; contact LMS at patron’s current school to follow up. If obligation is OLD, you can look up Patron (Circulation > Uncheck Only My Patrons> Find Patron) to mark book Lost/forgive Fine.

  57. Uncheck Resources
  58. Can include materials/fines your patrons have from other sites for both Report and Notices. Try to collect these from students and send to LMS at previous school. If OLD or unable to collect, contact LMS with patron name/obligation details and ask them to remove the obligation. Click CONTINUE.

  60. Select & Sort by Homeroom
  61. Uncheck start a new page for each group (unless giving to teacher)
  62. Include Title, Price, Phone Number, Subtotal, Grade Level
  63. Click SAVE SETUP.
  64. Save As: Overdue List by Homeroom. Schedule Weekly, e.g. Monday 8:00 AM
  65. Save Setup. Click Run to see Report now. Refresh until Completed, then View.
  66. Materials from other schools appear on Report in parentheses in red with school’s 4-digit #/acronym.
  67. Former patrons now at other schools listed by School at end of Report.
  68. Access Report weekly from Back Office tab > Job Manager
  69. Print Patron Barcodes - Reports > Patron Reports
  70. If students will be bringing BCPS One cards, print class pages of Barcodes by Homeroom to store in a binder at Circ desk in case of forgotten/lost One Cards.
  71. Select by Homeroom. Sort by Grade Level, then Homeroom Teacher.
  72. Update Patrons to limit to only Student Patron types. Uncheck INACTIVE patrons.
  73. Include Barcode #
  74. Formatted for: Use at Circulation Desk; check Start a New Page for Each Group
  75. Include Library Circulation Command Barcodes
  76. If students are not using BCPSOne Cards, print individual barcode labels for index cards or shelf markers (Elementary only).
  77. Follow directions from section a. above, but for iv., check Formatted for: Barcode Labels. Use Avery 5160 labels.
  78. Can run one Homeroom at a time (however will have some blank labels).
  79. If running all Homerooms, will need to refer to class lists to divide by class.
