Speaker Biography

Short Bio: Bill Margaretta is President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of The New Jersey State Safety Council and is one of New Jersey’s Leading Safety Advocates.

Long Bio:

William Margaretta is the President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the New Jersey State Safety Council since October 1, 1996. He is responsible for the all administrative, human resource and financial functions of the Council. He is the Chief Spokesman for the Board in articulating the Council’s Mission. That Mission is to educate and influence society in New Jersey to adopt safety and health policies, practices, and procedures that prevent and mitigate human and economic losses arising from accidents and adverse occupational and environmental exposures.

He represents the public on the Governor’s Highway Traffic Safety Policy Advisory Committee (HTSPAC). Bill was given the 2005 Partnership Award by the Division of Highway Safety for his leadership role in highway traffic safety issues.

Bill was appointed to serve on the Safety Committee of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in January of 2004, he was reappointed again in 2006.

Bill was appointed to the Fairness and Affordability Taskforce to review the current motor vehicle point system during.

Bill is past chairperson of the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee an advisory group reporting by statute to the Commissioner of Labor.

Bill is the co-author of the New Jersey Fire College’s Family Fire Safety Program

Governor Whitman appointed Bill in 1996 the first Chairman of the New Jersey Public Employee Safety and Health Review Commission. This is a group of three individuals empowered to review any compliance actions that were contested by public agencies as a result of an action by the Commissioner of Labor. Bill was instrumental in drafting the current regulations for New Jersey’s PEOSHA Review Commission Procedures. He was re-appointed both as a member and as Chairman by Gov. Cody again in 2005 until September 2010.

Bill is also a member of the Department of Health’s special advisory committee on Indoor Air Quality.

Bill was elected to the International Advisory Committee for the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Courses in September 2005.

He is a Past President of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).. Bill was awarded the Safety Professional of Year Award in 1986 for his work as the Regional Vice President in charge of Professional Development. During this time Bill was instrumental as a founding member of the Mid Atlantic Safety and Health Expo committee, which served as the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE)’s Professional Development Conference for 5 years.

From 1982 to 1996 Bill was Director of Employee Relations with NUI Corporation responsible for 1200 employees, in 5 companies operating in 7 states. Bill’s responsibilities included all aspects of both employee relations and labor relations. Bill was the chief negotiator for NUI. Bill was also responsible for all recruiting, EEOC, Workers Compensation, Safety and Health, Corporate Training and Employee Assistance Programs. Bill chaired the Labor Relations Committee for the New Jersey Utility Association and was the National Chairman of the Labor Relations Committee for the American Gas Association.

Bill has taught the Safety and Employee Relations modules for the Professional Human Resource (PHR) and (Senior Professional Human Resource) SPHR exam for the past 10 years for the Northern New Jersey Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). Bill has a BA in Communication from Glassboro State College now Rowan University.

Bill is a Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA). He is also an OSHA Outreach General Industry Trainer and an OSHA Construction Outreach Trainer. Mr. Margaretta is proud to be the past Honorary Civilian Commander of Safety for 305 Air refueling wing at McGuire Air force Base in New Jersey. Bill is currently the Honorary Civilian Commander of 32nd Air fueling squadron Super base New Jersey.

Bill resides in Burlington New Jersey with his wife and three children.

Bill is the Author several articles in Occupational Safety Magazine.

Bill is a sought after national speaker and presenter on safety and health matters.
