Choose Your Path to Personalized Learning (AM - Feb. 5)

This session will provide an introduction to Personalized Learning (PL). It will compare and contrast this method with differentiation and individualization. You will learn what PL is (and isn’t), what it looks like, and how to set up your classroom environment to be conducive to PL. We will also address the 21st Century Skills required by students to successfully implement PL in your classroom. We will discuss the varied levels of entry into PL, so that you can best develop your own path to Personalized Learning. Whichever path you choose - you won’t be alone on your journey!

Rubric Development for Authentic Assessment – (AM– Feb 5)

In this session participants will discover ways to effectively create and use rubrics in planning, instruction and assessment.

3. K – 12 – Paola De Muro – Learning Skills Specialist – Academic Skills Centre Professor Associate III – Math Department – BU – (PM – Feb. 5)

Math Anxiety

In this session participants will receive a brief overview of math anxiety and math self-efficacy (confidence in one’s ability) and look at strategies to improving these issues from both the student and the teacher’s perspective and how to accommodate different learning styles.

4. K-12 - Kevin Tacan – Aboriginal Elder – BSD - (A.M – only – Feb. 5)

"Teach a Mile in My Moccasins"

In this session participants will hear about opportunities for implementing aboriginal perspectives into their regular classroom teachings / day. Kevin will provide examples as he goes through his presentation and share things he has seen teachers do that have hit or missed the mark.

5. EY – MY – SY – Carole Bonin - Curriculum Consultant – French –English Program (PM – Feb 5)

Implementation of the new Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes for the course French: Communication and Culture, Grades 4 to 12 (this session is for Grades 4 to 12)

Participants at this session will have the opportunity to explore the new Manitoba Curriculum Framework of Outcomes for the course French: Communication and Culture, Grades 4 to 12. We will explore suggested themes, the pedagogical principles of successful language learning and acts of communication. Also, in the context of various learning situations, participants will have the opportunity to explore the outcomes for their grade level(s).

6. K-12 - Chris Brown – PhD, CCC – Associate Professor Faculty of ED BU ; Chair – ED Psych & Student Services (AM – Feb 5)

Show Up, Be Present, and Keep Moving: Three Strategies for Teacher Wellness

Education has never been more demanding and research clearly indicates that teacher stress is at an all-time high. The purpose of this interactive workshop is to provide proven mindful stress reduction strategies for teachers to use to avoid burnout and to stay healthy and invigorated in the classroom. This workshop, based on positive psychology and third wave cognitive behavioral therapy, will focus on three key ingredients to lifelong wellness. While the focus of this interactive workshop is on teacher wellness, all of the strategies are also directly transferrable to student wellness.

7. K – 12 - Joanna Ford – EAL Specialist – BSD (AM – Feb 5)

Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Assessment practices for EAL Students

In this session we will look at several factors that can impact academic achievement for English as an Additional Language student. This short workshop will focus specifically on working with students who are arriving to school with educational gaps, and so are working towards learning English while also catching up with content area knowledge. This workshop will begin to create an awareness of the needs these students bring, and a way we can start gathering information about their needs to better inform our teaching practices with them.

8. K - 12 - Devon Caldwell – Jr/Sr Kindergarten Teacher, JK – Gr 8 Resource / Microsoft Innovative Expert – FLBSD (PM – Feb 5)

Connected Wellness: Yoga and Digital Tools for a Healthy Classroom

In today's busy world, teachers and students are often stressed, over-tired, and distracted. This session will explore digital tools as well as age-old practices such as meditation, yoga poses, and breathing techniques, to increase overall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being for both teachers and students. Add a few new tools to your repertoire to ease anxiety, integrate movement breaks,and improve mindfulness in both your classroom and personal life. Led by a Microsoft Innovative Expert Fellow and certified Hatha yoga teacher, this session seamlessly blends the old and the new for healthier classroom communities!

9. K – 12 - Cory Nevill - Literacy Specialist K-12 BSD (AM – Feb 5)

Session Title: Using Formative Assessment for Planning Instruction Grades 1-12

Session Description- this session will suggest a variety of formative assessment strategies that will engage students and support planning for instruction.

10. K-12 - Cam Symons – Associate Professor Faculty of ED BU (PM – Feb 5)

Communicating Student Learning

We will explore/review two MB Education documents: Communicating Student Learning: Guidelines for Schools, and the Manitoba Provincial Report Card Policy and Guidelines. We’ll review things like problems with grading, assessment strategies, assessment as/of/for learning, norm/criterion/self-referenced assessment, and reporting growth/progress/achievement. We will also get acquainted with the Provincial Report Card, and practice how to write meaningful comments for parents.

11. EY - Lisa Meadows – Multi-Age - Grade 3 / 4 Teacher – King George School - BSD

Using the UDL model in the EY Classroom (PM – Feb 5)

In this session you will receive examples of cross-curricular teaching and centers of S.S., Science, ELA, Math, as well as some Art and Heath for the grade 3 and 4 curriculums. I will show you the organizational process I’ve used, how I’ve infused Jennifer Katz’s “Teaching to Diversity” in my classroom, including the Respecting Diversity program and multiple intelligences. I will also touch on some of my co-teaching experience with our HALAP teacher and teacher librarian and there will be time to view and ask questions about some of the UDL centers and projects I’ve used in my classroom.

Differentiation and IEP Development (PM– Feb 5)

P.M. - Afternoon Session:

This session will explore the process of IEP development, including when and how to modify programming, as well as developing SMART goals.

14. MY – SY - Linda Jamieson – BSD Professional Learning & Development / RTI Specialist

Simple Engagement Ideas for Middle Years & Senior Years – (A.M./P.M. – Feb 5)

This sessions shares ideas for engagement and a means of keeping track: are we including students in the discussions, are they moving enough and not wasting transition time? These simple ideas could transform your teaching and student engagement. Engagement, expression of knowledge gained and representation of learning material are all equally important to student success.
