New Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Governor’s First Media Engagement

Anguilla’s Premier and the chairman of the ECCB Monetary Council, the Honourable Victor F Banks introduced the new Governor of the ECCB, Mr. Timothy N J Antoine. His vision on leadership in management, economics, transparency, accountability and banking to keep stability in the EC currency across the region was expressed to media across the region.

Under a new mantra, STAR. S for service excellence, T for teamwork, A for accountability, and R for results. Mr. Antoine introduced his strategic priorities to cover financial stability, fiscal and debt sustainability, growth, competitiveness, employment, and enhancing organizational effectiveness. He referred to the ECCB working as public servants who are accountable to serve the people of the region; saying that this is a challenging time that must be led by structural transformation. He stressed the importance for sustainable public finances, the ability to operate in a competitive market and having single digit unemployment figures within the region. He wants to encourage youth employment by facilitating higher education and job opportunities that engage youth also noting that people must realize their potential for improving their quality of life.

Mr. Antoine stated the role for the national bank in the economy is to ensure the regions banking system is strong by monitoring credible and fiscal roots. To provide thought leadership, financial stability, enhance organizational effectiveness, create opportunities, and to be pro-active in continuous learning, sharing, skills and resources.

Some new initiatives are being launched to help educate the region on the ECCB.“Inside Finance”will be a weekly podcast explaining what the bank does and how it supports the region. Media workshops, Media engagement and briefings to be held periodically. He expressedinterest in the $300 billion fund the United Kingdom is making available to the region, expanding online services by partnering with banking institutions worldwide to offer a wider range of offerings like wire transfers, supporting financing to small businesses, and leveraging relationships to support employment development throughout the region.
