New Behavior Team Member Orientation – Optional Activity: Vocabulary Review
After viewing the Vocabulary Review PowerPoint, Match the vocabulary term to its corresponding definition. Write the letter of the term in the box to the left of the definition. See example provided below. The terms and definitions in each table only relate to each other. There is no cross population required amongst the various pages/tables.
Vocabulary Term / DefinitionIntervention / G / A behavior that the student knows how, and/or has the skills, to perform but does not do so consistently.
Latency / A group of teachers who observe and provide feedback to each other several times each month in order to regularly monitor and improve methods.
Magnitude / A particular behavior is strengthened by the consequence of the stopping or avoiding of a negative condition
Negative Reinforcement / Additional services, strategies, or resources needed to address needs which are contributing to an undesirable behavior
PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports / Promoting positive classroom behaviors by assisting, modeling, demonstrating, practicing, and rewarding
appropriate behavior
Peer triad / The amount of time between the antecedent for the behavior and the behavior itself
Performance deficit / The behavioral component of Response to Intervention (see RTI).
Positive Reinforcement / The force or power of a behavior
Positive support / The process of increasing the rate or probability of a behavior by pairing it with a desirable stimulus
Vocabulary Term / Definition
Punishment / Weakens a behavior because a negative condition is introduced or experienced as a consequence of the behavior
Replacement behavior / Student behavioral change requires adults to Teach, Model, Prompt, and Reinforce expected behaviors
Restrictive disciplinary measure - / Is a framework for introducing academic and behavioral interventions to students. Typically 85-90% of students respond to Universal Level intervention, 10-15% of students will require Secondary Level interventions, and 3-5% of students will require Tertiary Level interventions
RTI - Response To Intervention / How a behavior looks (the physical dimension)
Skill deficit / Consequences for inappropriate behavior which limit or restrict student’s access to peers, education, and/or opportunities.
In a BIP professionals must list the consequences as well as strategies/criteria for their use (detention, suspension, physical restraint, isolated time out, etc.)
Target behavior / An observable and measurable action identified for intervention.
Teacher-student game / A system of behavior modification based on the systematic positive reinforcement of target behavior by earning objects or symbols that can be exchanged for other reinforcers.
TMPR / A more socially acceptable option to an undesired action that is to be taught to meet the identified function of the target behavior.
Token Economy / A brief intervention designed to help teachers establish clear expectations for engaged academic behavior and effective transitioning between activities.
Topography / A behavior that a student does not know how to perform.
Vocabulary Term / Definition
Antecedent / What the student derives from the behavior, not the punishment that occurred.
BIP – Behavior Intervention Plan / The reason why a student engages in a particular behavior. The benefit s/he is getting from the behavior. There are two options: to obtain or to avoid.
Consequence / The process of gathering information about a student’s behavior to determine the need for a Behavioral Intervention Plan. An approach that incorporates a variety of techniques and strategies to diagnose the causes and to identify likely interventions intended to address problem behavior.
Data driven decision making / The number of times a behavior occurs
Duration / The amount of time a behavior lasts
FBA – Functional Behavioral Assessment / Systematically collecting and analyzing various types of data to guide a range of decisions to help improve the success of students.
Frequency / Relevant events that precede a target behavior.
Function / An agreement that teaches and supports replacement behaviors and decreases or eliminates opportunities for the student to engage in behavior that hinders positive academic results
Home/school Team / A small group of stakeholders (including a family member) interested in and relevant to a child’s education who meet to discuss and evaluate current data, supports, and programming.
IEP – Individualized Education Program / A plan to address the specific needs of a student with a disability to appropriate access to general education, in the least restrictive environment.
