The fishing industry inNew Bedford and surrounding region employs over 3,500 people and seafood harvesting provides $850 millionto the local economy. Last year overall sales exceeded $260 million in the region, while Alaska, its nearest competitor had sales totaling $160,000 million.New Bedford and surrounding towns are protected from flooding along the coast by a Hurricane Barrier built in 1966 that can withstand a Category 3 Hurricane.
Company Background
- Family-owned and operated fish processing plantin New Bedford, MA. Founded in 1907 by Captain Ahab Neptune aka the “Old Man in the Sea” after retiring from actively fishing in the region. His great grandchildren, Sebastian and Ariel, continue the tradition today.
- Companyis located approximately 1 ½ miles from the inner harbor in a 100,000 sq. ft.wooden main building that is described as quaint by both tourists and locals. Some metal storage and processing buildings have been added to the site over the years to manage fluctuations in demand.The back-up generator is old and hasn’t been reliable.
- Company processes 1,000,000 lbs of fish (lobster, quahogs, clams, blue fish) annually and wholesales fish to local and inland restaurants in the Providence/Boston area. Retail sales are handled in its “Tackle Shack” diner/fish store located on the pier. This is a popular spot with the tourists.
- Company employs 117 FT and 68.5 PT employees. Headcount fluctuates with seasonal demand. Some sales are handled by independents sales staff as well as some delivery is handled by independent truckers based on seasonal demand.CallCenter and Sales use desktop pcs and phones.
- The company has begun to look at replacing the intercom system within the buildings and creating a mini data center that is managed by a vendor. The company ownership doesn’t believe in spending money on a BCP. However, the owners have a reciprocal relationship with the “Big Flounder”, a fish processing plant on Long Island to help each other during times of peak demand. In addition, the Finance group does weekly disk backs up of the desktop pc hard drives and takes home the disks.
