Purpose:

The purpose of this document is to provide general instructions to install Client POSoft version 3.1.15 network software on a computer that is running Windows 98 SE. NOTE: the steps are the same for all versions of Windows. Some screens may be slightly different depending on your version of Windows.

Client Installation Instructions for Windows 98 SE (Second Edition)

Before the Installation

Make sure hardware and Windows requirements are met

  • Operating system: Windows 98 SE or better
  • RAM: 256 MB or better
  • 500 MB free hard disk space
  • Processor: Pentium 3 or better

Make sure no prior POSoft exists

Start by looking in Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. If a prior POSoft exists, please call POStechnical support.

Installation

Install MDAC 2.8.

  1. Put the “POSoft Network 3.1.15” CD in your CD-Rom drive.
  2. On that CD, navigate to the Utilities folder.
  3. Double click the MDAC_TYP file in that folder.
  4. Continue through the setup to completion.

Install the POSoft 3.1.14 client software:

  1. On that CD, navigate to \Client\3.1.14 Client Install
  2. In that folder, double click the file “setup.exe”.
  3. On each screen, click the highlighted button. Do not attempt to change any of the defaults. Except if a license screen appears, check “I accept” and then continue.
  4. Continue through the setup to completion.

Install the POSoft 3.1.15 client update software:

  1. On that CD, navigate to \Client\3.1.15 Client Update
  2. In that folder, double click the file POSoftClientUpdate.exe.
  3. On each screen, click the highlighted button. Do not attempt to change any of the defaults. Except if a license screen appears, check “I accept” and then continue.
  4. Continue through the setup to completion.

Setup ODBC:

  1. Open your Control Panel.
  2. Find the ODBC or Data Sources panel and double click on it(in XP Pro, it will be under Administrative Tools):
  3. Click on the “System DSN” tab.
  4. Double Click on “DentalCAD”.
  5. Where it asks “Which SQL server do you want to connect to?” click on the dropdown box and select the computer that is your server (the same as the ”computer name” identified during the server installation). If that computer name does not appear in the list, enter the computer name\POSoft. For instance, if the computer name is proxserver, enter PROXSERVER\POSoft:
  6. Click Next.
  7. On the next screen,type “sa” in the Login ID box, and “pos1” in the Password box:
  8. Click Next.On the following screen, click on the dropdown box to change the default database to: “DentalCAD”.
  9. Click Next. Click Finish.
  10. On the next screen, click “Test Data Source”:
    …and wait a few seconds. Then you should see this:
  11. Then click OK twice to return to the ODBC Data Source Administrator screen.
  12. Double Click on “POSDATASQL”.
  13. Where it asks “Which SQL server do you want to connect to?” click on the dropdown box and select the machine that is your server (the same as the ”computer name” identified during server installation). If that computer name does not appear in the list, enter the computer name\POSoft. For instance, if the computer name is proxserver, enter PROXSERVER\POSoft.
  14. Click Next.
  15. One the next screen, type sa in the Login ID box, and pos1 in the Password box:
  16. Click Next.
  17. On the next Screen, click on the dropdown box to change the default database to: “POSPatientData”.
  18. Click Next. Click Finish.
  19. Click “Test Data Source”, wait for the message “TESTS COMPLETED SUCCESFFULLY”. Then click OK twice.
  20. Click OK to close the ODBC Data… window.
  21. Close the Control Panel window.

Map the server’s POSoft folder:

  1. Click Start, Programs, Windows Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools and on “Map Network Drive”
  3. Click the and locate the Y: drive (or any other available drive)
  4. Enter the network path for the shared folder and click finish as follows:
    \\servername\POSoft , where servername is the name of your server computer.
  5. Click the Finish button

Run Make_ini:

  1. On the CD, in the Utilities folder, double click the Make_ini file. A black screen will open. Type the following 4 items and press the Enter key after each entry – see sample screen shot below:

  4. (the name of the server computer)
  5. (the shared drive letter)
  6. After pressing Enter after the fourth prompt, the black screen will close.

Start POSoft

  1. Make sure you can access the internet.
  2. Double click the POSoft icon that should be on your desktop screen by now.
  3. At the licensing screen, enter your user name and password.
  4. For the system name type Client_1 for the first client and Client_2 for the second Client and so on.
  5. Please label each computer with its corresponding system name (Client_1, Client2 …). It is best to use a sticker label, and the computer monitor is an ideal location to place each label.
  6. Click the “Connect to POSoft license server” button JUST ONCE and wait. After a few seconds, you should see “License successfully received”. Click OK.
  7. POSoft should start. Close it.
