Kids kick off school soccer carnival

More than 250boys and girls will help kick off the inaugural Primary Schools Football Carnival at Toowoomba Grammar tomorrow from 9am – 3pm.

Twenty-six teams will compete in the all school 7-a-side tournament as part of the 2010 Festival of Football Toowoomba activities.

The students are in years four to seven and come from schools as far as Goondiwindi, Dalby and Wheatvale.

Former Socceroos coach and Festival Patron Mr Rale Rasic arrived in Toowoomba today and will attend the carnival to cheer on participants and present awards in the official presentation at 2.45pm.

Carnival organiser Chris McLeod said the response from schools to the inaugural carnival had been overwhelming.

“The response has been terrific. Schools have really jumped on board and been eager to participate,” Mr McLeod said.

“It’s a great opportunity for the younger students to participate in a large tournament with their friends and peers,” he said.

“It’s really satisfying to see lots of kids really excited about being active and having fun while playing football.”

The teams will compete in preliminary games in the morning and then contest the finals in the afternoon.

The finals will be played at 2pm followed by the official prize presentation at 2.45pm with Mr Rasic.

The Football Toowoomba’s 2010 Festival of Football Toowoomba aims to promote football to people of all ages and abilities in the community and encourage them to share in the excitement of this month’s World Cup in South Africa.

The Festival of Football will run a variety of events this week including the Athletes with Disabilities Games at USQ and Grand Dinner at Rumours on Friday followed by its Gala Games on Saturday 5 June at Captain Cook ovals in Toowoomba.
