Nederland Water Meter Upgrade Project

Project Details

The Water Meter Upgrade Project will include installation of new water meters and automated meter reading equipment, and an upgrade of customers’ current water supply plumbing. Existing water meters of most residential water customers will be replaced with new Zenner water maters. Automated meter reading equipment will include a battery-powered, electronic data transmitter that will be wired directly to the electronic register of the water meter, and mounted to the building exterior when possible.

Project Schedule

The water meter project is wrapping up with approximately 75 residences still needing a meter upgrade. We hope to have all meter installations complete by the end of summer 2015.

Appointments

Appointment can be scheduled through the Nederland Water Department at (303) 258-3088. At the confirmed appointment time, qualified personnel will be dispatched to your address to upgrade your water service. Work will be scheduled during normal business hours:Tuesday through Thursday, 7AM to 2:30PM. On a limited basis, work can be scheduled for after normal business hours, or during weekends, depending on availability of project personnel.

Access

An adultwill need to be present during service work. We cannot enter a building without a person over the age of 18 being present. We request that ourpersonnel have clear, unimpeded access to everyone’s water meter and water heater. A brief interruption to water service will be necessary, and workwill usually be completed within 1 to 3 hoursafter arrival in most cases.

Data Transmission

With the installation of a data transmitter wired directly to the water meter, water meter datacan be transmitted via radio signal through a mosaic of receivers/transmitters to Town Hall. Data from each water metercanthen be collected into the Town’s computer billing system to generate customer bills. Data transmitter equipment is regulated by the FCC, and transmits at extremely low power (less than 1/100 of a watt). Each transmission lasts only a fraction of a second usually once a day during nighttime hours.

Mandatory Participation

This is a mandatory water service upgrade - all water customers must participate. If a customer does not schedule an appointment by the date specified in the notification letter, penalties and possible water shut offs may occur.

Project Benefits

Benefits of the new water data collection system include new water meters for most customers, daily usage information for each water customer (upon request), and leak detection. If a meter detects at least 1 gallon of usage for every hour of a 24 hour period, the data system will alert the water department that unusual water usage has been detected at a specific customer location. The water department can then notify the customer of the unusual water consumption.
