NDSOS Board Meeting Minutes

Governor’s Room – Ramkota Inn, Bismarck, ND
Members Present: Larry Zavada, Steve Heim, Tim Holte, Brandt Dick, Frank Schill, Jim Gross, Mitch Carlson, Tom Retting, Leslie Bieber, and Executive Director, ElRoy Burkle.
Also Present: Janet Brown, Treasurer and two representatives from other schools.
Call Meeting to Order Meeting was called to order at 6:30 by President Zavada. The NDSOS Board introduced themselves.
Agenda Motion by Jim Gross/second by Tom Retting to approve the agenda as presented. MC
Minutes Motion by Jim Gross/second by Brandt Dick to approve the October 27, 2017 minutes as presented. MC
Financial Report Janet Brown gave the financial report: NDSOS had a 7/1/17 checking account balance of $99,293.78, income of $39,898.76, expenses of $27,959.98 for a current checking account balance of $111,232.56. Also have assets of $30,447.81 in three 6 month CDs for total assets of $141,680.37. Mitch Carlson moved to approve report with Tom Retting seconding the motion. MC A decision will be made regarding CDs at the March Retreat.
Election of Officers Brandt Dick was elected president and Steve Heim elected vice president.

Online Instruction and Other Services: Zavada, Schill, Gross, Ralston
Web-site and Communications: L Carlson, Bieber, Holte, Kopplinger

Executive Director’s Report Elroy Burkle reported on membership, advertisers, membership renewal letters to be sent out in May, booths at NDCEL and NDSBA partnered with NDCDE, meetings attended.
PartnershipsUpdate Elroy gave updates on NDCDE, Vertical Alliance, Nelson Ag Academy, ND Safety Council, “I Am Resilient”, Opioid Resources.
Legislative Items Discussion was held on NDASA Focus Groups updates on Finance by Brandt Dick and Student Services by Jim Gross. Transportation, school funding, local control issues discussion was shared.
Other Items Strategic Planning set for March 28-29 beginning with supper at 6 pm, group evening meeting, and concluding by noon March 29. Elroy will be sending out information.
NDCDE Appreciation in May with cake and ice cream.
Review of Executive Director Job Description – Mitch Carlson made motion that the director has complied with his job description, second by Leslie Bieber. MC The Communication Committee will work on an evaluation process.
Rural School Collaboration Gary Funk visited with the group via phone about the Rural School Collaborative Hubs and how it’s working in other areas. Larry Zavada made a motion to have NDSOS join the Rural School Collaboration for two years/Frank Schill seconded the motion. MC
Vertical Alliance NDSOS approved the renewal of bus driver training with Vertical Alliance AKA INFINITI-I. The rates per user will be $20 and the renewal (state-wide) will be $1581.25.
Recognition Tom Retting was recognized for his service to NDSOS. Dr. Steve Johnson will take his place on the Board. Also recognized was Larry Zavada for his dedication to education and to NDSOS for his leadership as president.
