NDIS Client Setup

For Lucent/Agere Radios And Windows 95, 98, 2000 or ME

To ensure a smooth setup of the NDIS client, first complete the items on the preparation checklist.

Preparation Checklist

√Make sure you are using the latest version of KarlNet software on the ISP Base Station.

  • Currently, version 3.88

√Make sure that you have the Base Station set up as an ISP Base Station.

  • NDIS Clients WILL NOT talk to Base Stations only ISP Base Stations.

√Install the latest version of Lucent/Agere Radio card firmware on ALL devices, including the client card itself and the Base Station..

  • Version 6.08 can be downloaded from the KarlNet License-It site ( This does not imply that this is the latest version available.

√The installation process will ask you for your Windows CD. Have it available or copy the CAB files to your hard drive.

  • Usually located in c:\windows\options\cabs

Installation Instructions

  • Connect to After logging in, select the option to download files.
  • Download and extract all of the needed files on your hard drive.
  • For example, if you are downloading TurboCell files, select the link for TurboCell. When extracting the files, use the following directory structure:
  • Extract all driver files in c:\my documents\tc-install\
  • Extract the client program files in c:\my documents\tc-install\client\
  • Extract the cqi program filesc:\my documents\tc-install\cqi\

Remove the existing device driver from your computer.

  • Right click on “My Computer” from the desktop
  • Click on “Properties”
  • Click on “Device Manager” tab
  • Click on “Network Adapters” to show the individual network cards
  • Highlight “Orinoco PC Card”
  • Click the “Remove” button

VERY IMPORTANT! When prompted to restart the computer, click NO.

Locate all previously installed TurboCell driver files, so that you can delete them in the next step.

  • Click on “Start”
  • Click on “Find” (or “Search”)
  • Click on “For Files or Folders”
  • Search for “wv” (without the quotes)
  • Make note of the location of the following files:
  • WVLAN.CNT
  • WVLAN.CPL
  • WVLAN.HLP
  • WVLAN_.CPL
  • WVLAN41.DLL
  • WVLAN41.INF
  • WVLAN41.SYS
  • WVLAN41N.INF
  • WVLANCFG.EXE
  • WVLANUIF.VXD
  • WVLNINST.DLL

Remove all previous TurboCell driver files from your hard drive. This is necessary because the installation process will find the “old” driver files and re-install them, regardless of what you tell the program to do.

Delete any of the files located in the previous step from the following directories:

  • -c:\windows
  • -c:\windows\system\
  • -c:\windows\inf
  • -c:\windows\inf\other

Locate all previously installed Lucent/Agere ORiNOCO driver files, so that you can delete them in the next step.

  • Click on “Start”
  • Click on “Find” (or “Search”)
  • Click on “For Files or Folders”
  • Search for “48” (without the quotes)
  • Make note of the location of the following files:
  • WILUC48.DLL
  • WCLUC48.EXE
  • WLLUC48.INF
  • WLLUC48.SYS
  • WNLUC48.CPL
  • WULUC48.VXD
  • Remove all previously installed Lucent/Agere ORiNOCO drive files from your hard drive. This is necessary because the installation process will find the “old” driver files and re-install them, regardless of what you tell the program to do.

Delete the files located in the previous step from the following directories:

  • -c:\windows
  • -c:\windows\system\
  • -c:\windows\inf

o-c:\windows\inf\other

You may also want to delete WNLUC.HLP and WLLUC.CNT. These are the help files associated with the old drivers.

  • Restart the computer by clicking “Start”, “Shutdown”, “Restart Computer”

IMPORTANT! When Windows restarts you must see the “Add New Hardware Wizard”. If you do not, you did not get rid of all of the necessary files from your hard drive. Repeat the steps above and make sure you delete all of the files.

  • After the computer restarts, you can install new driver files via the “Add New Hardware Wizard”. You will see a screen with two options:
  1. Search for the best driver for your device
  2. Display a list of all…
  • Select the “Display a list…” option.
Scroll down and select “Network Adapters”.
  • Click on the “Have disk” button.
  • Click on the “Browse” button.
  • Browse to the directory on your hard drive where you extracted the driver files when you downloaded them earlier (i.e., c:\my documents\tc-install\).
  • Click “OK”.
  • A number of files will be copied, and eventually you will be prompted for the Windows CAB files. Either insert the windows CD or navigate to the directory where you copied the files during the installation preparations.
  • Click “Next”. You will see a screen that tells you the system is “building a driver database”.
  • After the driver database build is complete, set up the screen with your license information, frequency, encryption, etc.
  • Click “Finish” then click “OK” to restart the computer.

Note: If the system timed out, and you were not able to enter all of the license information, frequency, encryption, etc., you can go into the control panel and double click on the Turbocell icon to complete the process.
